Nice work Jet-6 This is probably the handiest little tech thread I've found on any of the forums. I used it to do the opposite of what you intended; Replace my minispooled centre with a nice new tight limo centre in my VN SS. The only thing I would like to add was in regards to step 6 & 7 with the "diff spreader". This didn't quite work for me as my centre was held fairly tightly by the shims and I didn't like the idea of using a jimmy bar to pry the thing out like I'd been told I'd need to. Instead I adopted your idea and wrapped the chain around the centre and used the bottle jack to pull the centre out. Thought someone might be able to use the idea too. Thanks Bob

Do you take out the washers as well as the spider gears? You make no mention of the washers in the walkthrough. I figured I'd leave them in but now am not so sure because I am having a hard time getting the long pinion into the housing completely. cheers - Julian (high on diff oil)

Hi guys so just a few questions about this, but with a mini-spool. I'm planning on doing this very soon to my VP, i imagine the procedure is very similar etc. except i want to do it with a mini-spool From my understanding, a minispool will not give you a new thing to bolt the big gear onto - right? So therefore: - take out center (after marking positions of shims etc) - take center apart into two.. (marking it) - take out pins holding spider gears in (marking them) - slide the mini spool into where the spider gears were - put pins back into same spots they were, so to hold the minispool in place - put the center back together, the way it was marked, torque the bolts, etc... (locktite?) - Put the center back in the diff housing, using the same shim setup as before you took it out... axles, etc etc is that right? Won't the gears not mesh quite the same as they used to? therefore causing heat, wear and eventually a clunketty clunk? Thanks! Luke

My spool installation was a disaster!!!!!! mind you i didnt read this thread before doin it, i read parts of info from all over the place - my first mistake. While taking the axles out, i fu_kd the drums using them as leverage! When i took the center out which i didnt need a diff spreader i just pulled it out, anyway i didnt mark the shims or bearing caps and so when i went to put everything back in, i cracked one of the shims tryin to get it in. So now im just taking the time to also do a rear disc brake conversion and hopefully a 28spline center and axles. And i have a question, can i just put in the 28 spline carrier and axles into the 25spline diff?

Yes but you will have to "set up" the diff to the correct specs now
