i have a 5l VL. it is an ex-cop car, i'm unsure of the engine mods. it is carby and has good exhaust system. it still has stock air cleaner. the diff has been changed to 3.45 lsd.
the lowered factory suspension, with extremely thick k-mac sway bars makes it handle like a dream
I've dragged a lot of turbos and usually win, but a few have totally flogged me
one i beat just, had 12psi boost and was manual......
i have beaten 5l vn's, 5l eb's.
not sure what the power output is, i've been trying to get info on the ex-cop v8's in the vl's, but can't find anything anywhere.
I rang holden and they told me they have a massive gap in there records, apparently they have hardly any records of engine\chassis numbers for most of 80's and early 90's! they guy said they wouldn't give out info on interceptors motors anyway...lol
also has heapz of pollution gear which i am gonna take off soon, wonder how much difference this will make to performance? want to install EFI soon....

i reackon thats bull schitt... the slack cun.ts just couldnt be bothered looking it up for you!!!!
My housemate works at the 308 Shop in Dandy and says that even tho the VL 304 (carby) was a slow, emission stangled dog, it had the best internals (dunno what tho) and heads etc of all of the old skool V8's.
He says small breathing and cam mods, and some emission mods they will really fly. And he has seen some impressive results from mild VL 304 packages.
A 3.45 diff will certainly make a difference too over the 3.08 ratio they had standard.
If you want more detailed info I'm happy to ask him.
Cheers.

aren't all VL V8's 304's? The 308's were last in the VK's?
Anyway - it's hard to say a worked V8 may beat a standard VL turb - all depends on mods done to each car. I have a worked V8 in my VL and it will be turbos - even moddes ones, but there are modded ones that'll also beat me

all VL's had 304 v8's. The change was made in june 1985, midway thru the VK model. the engine was reduced slightly to comply with some rules with racing. It allowed them to drop the weight of the car by 75kg. They were not injected neither were ones in VL. Also the 304 in the vl drinks unleaded petrol, i am not sure but i don't think the ones in the vk would......i believe, but don't hold me on this, that the vl v8 was the only carby v8 that drank unleaded.
The first fuel injected v8 was in the Walkinshaw and was standard from VN.
Also to anyone who is thinking of putting a v8 in a vl....it has to be a series II, the floor pans were altered for the exhaust. u'll notice a lump in the passenger side of the car only in the 2nd series.
To chasyr - i would appreciate any information u can give me.......escpecailly if u can find out specifications on interceptor built v8's in VL's and the fitting of EFI systems.
also i will contact holden again in regards to my car, via engine\chassis numbers......let u's know how i go
The 308 was dropped to 304 so that they could enter the Group A commodores in a different class, in which the cutoff was 5 litres. I'm fairly sure the 304 is still closer to 5 litres than 4.9... but then there's still a squillion gen 3 owners who think they have 350s

I have a VL Calais with a 328 stroker in it. Have never come up against any VL Turbo's!
mrkrinkle- Your comments about the different floor pans on the series 1 and 2 VL's (for the exhaust) is quite interesting. How exactly is the floor different on each model? ie what effect does it have on the car? Thanks

The exhaust system for a v8 would not fit in the series i, i think cause the floor was to low. I don't know exactly to much about it myself.......
you will notice however that in a series II, on the passenger side floor there is a hump in the floor next to the centre console......
i was told by mechanic that they were changed to fit v8's. Strangely though, there is a VL calais v8 smashed for auction at fowles\pickles (i forget) and the interior is series 1 and the build date was 12/86.
So i am confused on that a bit myself, cause i thought series ii was 87+. Unless it was a custom job....
u should come across a vl turbo one day soon, there are heapz on the road!.....
My VL Calais V8 is a series 1 (87 model) and it has the hump in the floor next to the centre console. The V8 was available in both series 1 and 2 VL's
Edit: I believe there were 2 different front floor pans. One was for models prior to Dec 86 and one was for models from Dec 86 onwards. Id say the V8 engine was prob available in VL's from Dec 86 onwards.
