Had they been sold for as long as the V6 or the red/blue/black motor I would have thought parts prices would have been comparable, especially as it would probably have been viable to then set up local production. I can't see how having the Buick properly designed (60 degree bank, alloy heads and overhead cam, even if only SOHC) would have significantly increased parts costs. IMHO it's a latter-day red motor: a cheap and nasty obsolete iron lump that just does the job. Holden's made it acceptable by throwing increasingly sophisticated engine management and mountings at it, but it's still IMHO a more sophisticated sow's ear, not a silk purse. What would that same effort have achieved on an engine that was properly designed in the first place? Holden had better watch out on the engine front because the comparison in technology between the current Falcon and Commodore sixes is frankly embarrassing.

The HSV Supercharged six cylinder engines were only 180kw's I believe.

i thought that the were limited in injector size to produce this sort of power Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Well the Holden V6/V8 is no BMW in turms of engine design and quality. The "Aussi V8" in my eyes is just an imported yank oil/fuel guzzling brick. I have had a ride in a BMW 325ti and in all honesty, you can't compare this car to a commodore. Sure the engine pumps out not soo much power, but the engine is soooo silky smooth and power is available right through the rev range. I can see how the M3 would eat a commodore with 333hp under its belt and only a 3.3L engine. Can't compare that to a holden red 202 now can we?

umm... red 202s haven't been built since the 70's mate, unlike M3s... M3s are 3 litre I thought...

Latest model is 3.3L, previous one 3L. I refer to the technology that has changed over the past 30 years. Just saying that if the 3.8L V6 was engineered accordingly, we would have 390hp n/a commodore! I know its kinda apples and oranges talk here with the time difference. Engine power is less, and the car heavier, the latest comodores are best left as V8's!! Anyway the V6 Com is a family car, not a race beast. I guess if they were built like a beemer they would cost twice as much. Thats prolly why they are behind in technology and magna is front wheel drive I guess to keep costs down. Magna would prolly eat falcadores for breakfast, if not for front wheel drive. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

holden had better start playin catch up real fast!! as stated before, the XR6T IS the next vlt, and once warranties start finishing these things will take over the performance scene in a big way!! i'm not a ford or holden fan, i'm a car fan. thats the best way to be! i'm sick of all these one eyed supporters that bag everyone else out for their choice of car i'm saving my pennies now for an XR6T so i can have 2 inline 6 turbo toys to play with regards mark!! my dad just got a Nizpro kit for his xr6t, we drove all the way down to melbourne to get it in (i live in Sydney). It runs 341.4rwkw @ 16psi. My dads just left for QLD to get a new gearbox and tune up, should be running 20psi and a 6speed gearbox. when he gets back ill take a few picks of his car. specs: - Blue print - lowered 1" with progressive rate springs - herrod front grill - deep dish 6 spoke 19" wheels - 6pot front calipers, 4pot rears with vented rotors(they were pricey) - herrod short shifter kit - Nizpro Kit - Custom Exhaust - twin 2.5" with center muffler removed done by Tuffys Sydney EDIT: forgot about the exhaust!

Just to throw in another 2 cents worth....supercharged v6 is 171 kw, when hsv had it (they don't make XU6's anymore) it was 180kw. The new Commodore S with this engine was hosed by a N/A BA falcon in a comparison in Motor. The 0-100 and 1/4 times were very close, about 2-3 tenths in it (honestly can't remember which was quicker) Overall the Falcon was a heaps better car, handling, engine refinement etc. The new M3 is a 3.2L, one of the most manic, smooth yet rev-happy, torquey, and generally spastic cars i've ever been in. (My mates Dad has one) Saying that a new N/A VX commodore will outrun a VLT is blatant crap. Power figures don't mean everyting..... by that i mean sure the v6 has 160 odd kw, but there is no great engine response, no torque until it's revving, and it's harsh and rattly, doesn't like revving anyway. Meanwhile the VLT has left the line with nice low-down torque, and although it doesn't rev, we all know at three grand that turbo's gonna come on song, and see ya later! No, I am not a VL turbo diehard, before you acuse me, just setting a couple of things straight. I have two R31 skylines, one is a SVD GTS2, one a stocky GX with exhaust, and K&N panel filter. I have hosed many v6 commodores in the GX, from VN to VY, which is mainly cos of diff ratios... I just can't see how anyone can say a VX will beat a VLT, or any slighlty modded rb30 for that matter....... James

Oops! Forgot to answer someone's question.... the BA falcon turbo's are rated at 600 HP, apparently they have to be that big to deliver good volumes of air at low boost, remember a 4 litre is gonna need a fair bit more air pumped in than most engines to give the same pressure reading, which is 6 psi in stock form

gxrb30: Yes, I believe that, the 325ti that I had a drive in was an inline 6. It pulled like mad, had torque where you wouldnt expect it to. The power just kept on going, I could only dream of the M3 in comparasin. I remember watching the tacho hitting 6 grand and confusingly felt like it was only 3 or 4 grand. Such a smooth well refined motor, these cars are out of holden / ford / jap legue in my opinion. Although I still give merit to the RB30 since I still believe it to be a better motor than even the latest holden alloy motor. The last time i was in a BA was not soo good though...It pulled hard, the note was nice, the torque for its weight good. But the ownder of the car was tired and made a simple mistake. Red light... lucky no one was hurt, technically I could have been killed IF the other car Tboned us, hit the nose instead. Practically wrote the BA off though... As well as the other car.

Well take that feeling you had in a 325, and double it...... no really, literally double it. My mates dad's is also the CSL, which is the lightweight track version of the M3. It has 265kw (NA, 3.2 straight six!) and as i have said it's mental... All BMW sixes are straight, always have been and hopefully always will be, they definitely make the smoothest engines going around. They're strange though, I know what you mean, you don't expect torque to be increasing around 5000 rev mark, but that's what they do(Maybe not a 325) And they manage to do it while still having plenty of twist available at around 2 or grand. All those cams and valves, and some tricky software can do wonders for an engine. Still doesn't come close to the RB26 for sheer brutality though, they are the meanest sixes in the world, and I'm gonna chuck one in my GX in a coupla years...... drift central!!
