Ive only owned it for 9 months. The dash to me looks like its very original. And the oil and volt gauges work and also the "Headlights on" warning light works. I probably only have the Berlina upper harness.

06-02-03, 19:31 GMT+10#42 Im just looking at my VL owners handbook and apparently the low fuel light and Drivers seat lumbar support was optional on all models.

that would make sense, cos ive got that aswell on my sl, i think only series 2 had the lumbar support thing though. maybe not, but all S1s that ive seen dont have it, but all s2s do

Yeah, but thats my point .. the way holden designed these cars was the same frame builds all versions .. most calais features fit into a SL frame without even wiring changes .. calais upper wiring harness gets you the dash no probs. Only thing that comes to mind that requires the entire body harness to be changed (or, added to/modified) is cruise control ...
Given the cars age, and the fact it could have had many owners .. its quite possible these changes have been done by owners ..

07-02-03, 13:44 GMT+10#47 Forgive my ignorance. I dont have any friends that own VL commodores so i cant compare. Under the radio or thereabouts it said Commodore SL. On the boot lid it says Executive? is there an SL Executive? And how do I identify a series I from a series II?

07-02-03, 14:58 GMT+10#48 It's probably just an SL.
No such thing as an SL Exec
Check the codes under the bonnet on the plates they'll tell you what model: SL, exec etc

07-02-03, 18:50 GMT+10#50 Check the codes .. mine is an SL, but says Exec on the bootlid. Accident damage in its previous life .. bootlid was replaced with one that happened to have exec badging .. the plates in the engine bay are the definitive sign of its true model ..

I Agree with you Lord data. A little off topic but, Im in the process of fitting power steering and when I put the power steering hydraulic lines on all the screw holes for the pipe brackets where already pre drilled, Even the 2 brackets on the sump where there. All I had to do was bolt them on.

07-02-03, 19:45 GMT+10#52 It really is a great design process .. build an Sl frame, and plug and fit bits based on trim levels .. especially great 16+ on, when theres heaps been wrecked, so we can all add bits as we go

08-02-03, 16:30 GMT+10#53 My VL has Executive on the boot and SL on the dash too, im gunna check its true identity under the bonnet soon, but it seems strange that some people have it, does anyone have an Executive with and Executive badge on the dash?

08-02-03, 20:14 GMT+10#54 Actually, there might be more to this .. I actually had always just assumed it was a replacement bootlid (pinstriping from the body doesnt carry over to the bootlid) ..
Been reading thru my factory service manuals, and interestingly enough, there is no reference to an "Exec" level .. only ever mentions SL, Berlina and Calais .. Perhaps the books were written early on in the production process (as youd think they would be) and executive was added late on during the process.. and some cars had already been built but not badged perhaps?

08-02-03, 20:57 GMT+10#55 My executive has Commodore SL on the dash too. I think because there is minimal difference between the SL and exec, they never bothered really documenting them both. An Exec is an SL with aircon and pwr steering. No point really talking about an Exec and SL in manuals, cus they are both the same really.

08-02-03, 23:03 GMT+10#56 Mines an SL with aircon and power steering, but exec on the boot ..
maybe if you bought an SL, and optioned those, they gave you an exec effectivly .. and someone somewhere along the line forgot the interior badges?

09-02-03, 11:14 GMT+10#57 Well that is all an exec is, an SL with air con and power steering. Same trim, same exterior (except for the badges) same dash, etc, etc. They are just an optioned up SL

09-02-03, 12:30 GMT+10#58 strange the way its badged tho .. VIN says its an SL, as does interior badge .. just the bootlid says exec

09-02-03, 16:01 GMT+10#59 i Checked out my VIN, and according to that mine is an exec, so i dont understand why it has an SL badge on the dash? maybe they didnt have a Executive dash badge???
