I can see quite clearly the people who haven't had an ABS system under thier foot. I dunno if it's jelousy or not. I myself don't give a **** that my vl doesn't have it, but my previous ride did have it and it's bloody awesome stuff. But yere the last thing i would be thinking about in an emergency is if i had ABS or not, you would just react the same and try to save your car and life i suppose. It was more a novelty to show to mates for me.
quote]That is the example I have been trying to make. Washed off a sh1tload of speed.........oooh..with no ABS..........which was the difference between walking away or not..In that case ABS would have been a curse and maybe i would have jumped on them, when leaving the tar & onto the dirt ABS WOULD have locked up, causing the car to increase speed.[/quote]
Again, I dont think anyone is saying that ABS will stop a ALL accidents, but it does give you a substantially increased chance of avioding a crash in 90% of cases, even though it may have had no effect in the case of your accident.
(Do you think ABS may have allowed you to avoid the kangaroo in the first place?)
But again, read the stats about how ABS works. If you can explain how you can perform this better manually please let me know.
Also, how would ABS have caused your car to ACCELERATE into the tree?

ABS probably wouldn't have helped me avoid the roo as I hit him before i saw him, they're quick little ***kers.
Well I didnt lock up, and as i said before, coming from tar onto gravel, ABS would have skidded causing momentum to increase.
The only thing I have against ABS is that people rely on it too much, and when for some reason it is not there these ABS worshipers wouldn't have a clue what to do because their first instinct is to JUMP on the pedal as hard as they can, and if a sensor is out, or fluid line is blocked it is too late to react manually then. I reckon you're better off knowing that it's not there at all.
Once again...it obviously comes down to personal preference, and mine is not to have it so that I don't lead myself into a false sense of security for what ifs.
The old mans VY has it, I don't like it so I don't drive it, and that is a Factory fitted, I dont think I would rely on a modified one. I class brakes as the most important thing on a car so I will stick to the ones i know will work all the time(if i keep them in good order that is)
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
well said boostedcal. People rely on things like ABS then one day they might be in a car without it and it could be you that they are heading for when they jump on the brake, lock it up and slide straight into you. I had abs on my VS and it was good but not something i would consider fitting to a car that didnt have it.
Cheers.
If a fluid line is blocked you would be more stuffed youed have no brakes or some of the wheels wouldnt brake hence different brakeing forces to each wheel

Also didn't the VP's have ABS as well?
yeah mate, my VP's got it
i havent really done any testing like stomping on the brakes in the wet
but i mite give it a go this winter. ive also got irs which is sweet... put the car in D and have the brake on and the ass end really sits down
its nice hehehe

So you think brake and car manufacturers are providing us with more dangerous braking systems in new model cars than we used to have??????
IMHO this has reached the point of being totally ridiculous.
We've already heard amazing claims that ABS can cause your car to accelerate whilst your trying to brake. ??????????????
Foot hard on brake, not accelerator......car accelerating..............WTF ????????????????????
You don't like ABS...fine but don't try to justify that with implausible ideas

squat is bad for traction actually, u want lift.

really? oh, i thort with the squat, the car is already 'halfway to launching' for a quicker takeoff?

No ****head..... skidding causes car to increase speed due to loss of traction untill enough time has elapsed for the momentum to supress. Is that clear enough? And I'm not saying that ABS will *** up all the time, but it is another artificial thing on the car to MAYBE go wrong.

No, squat is unloading the rear tyres, the way that it was explained to me, is, if you are standing on the bathroom scales and you are the "unsprung weight" (diff / wheels and tyres etc) and you are holding a car battery for eg. thats the "sprung weight" (body) if you drop the battery (body) suddenly (squat) there is a reduction in weight on the scales (the tyres). If you push the battery (body) up (lift) the weight on the scales (tyres) will be increased providing more grip.
does that make sense?
Good way of puting that but at the start yes that would be right but with a sudden stop of the battery as it has to stop sometime that would mean a downward accelaration would increase meaning the upword force springs etc would have to stop the down word motion hence an increase in grip more loading on the wheels at that time this change in loading is bad cause it changes your grip levels constantly due to the changes in loading correct me if Im wrong
Ummm...., no, not clear....again, please explain?
A locked wheel will STILL be impeding the forward momentum of the car & washing off speed, it just dosent do it as effectivley as a car under full braking load (but not skidding).
If you've got four wheels skidding on any surface, the car will be slowing dowm. Ever heard of friction?....ITS SIMPLE PHYSICS!!
The only way a car with locked wheels will pick up speed is if the gradient is steep enough for the cars weight & gravity to overcome the friction...not likely in 99% of the roads normal people travel.
Aus880 has hit the nail on the head. Its fine if you think that ABS is an "artifical" factor in a car, and you are an exeptional driving talent who can do better. Thats your opinion, and obviously nothing anyone else can say will change that.
But please dont try to make up bull**** stories to backup what you believe, just stick to the facts!
One thing I've learn't in my degree- OEMs know what they are doing. More so than any other mechanic or 'tuning house' as they like to be called. ABS is a good thing - final word. For those of you who think they can do better than ABS - they are wrong.
ABS is designed to be used in situations where grip and instantaneous acceleration is comprimised. THAT IS, when its wet, dirty etc, AND/OR you are turning a corner while braking.
I think that if the person wanting to do this conversion feels up to it, then go ahead, cause there are a lot of people out there capable of this task. Its just a matter of research to find out which sensors for the ABS are used in conjunction with one of that cars parameters - weight, suspension etc.
Good luck with the conversion, and don't forget how much you're spending compared to what it will be worth to you.
