29-01-03, 15:38 GMT+10#41 A standard V8 VL is a slug and a poor example to use.
No offence to fast modified VL V8s meant

29-01-03, 16:48 GMT+10#42 Im not good at maths but someone said it was 125kw/ton. Now a VN SS has 165kw and weighs in at around 1500kg. Half a ton should more than compensate for 40kw in my calculations.
Please dont flame me, like I said I suck at maths big time. I know there is the other bit about cubes/hp and stuff.
They are thinking of starting that restricted licence stuff here in QLD after that Supra smash, its being debated by parliment at the moment, no wait, all those bludgers are still on holidays.

29-01-03, 18:01 GMT+10#43 its quiet obvious that whoever has made these rules, clearly know nothing about cars. And thats the most annoying part.

29-01-03, 20:48 GMT+10#44 they had to make the rules to attempt to try and make the rulle apply to the majority of situations. the rule based on what I've been told, could not possible fit all calculations, so the law could have some revising done on it, as it is obviously not working as efficent as it was intened as in experienced drivers are still getting in high powered vehicles.

02-02-03, 00:34 GMT+10#45 The point is why pick on a V8?
I have been in a 200 kw VN v6 and a standard VN 5 litre V8,the V6 was actually quicker because it had more power & less weight.
Some cops are rev heads but some can't tell a straight 6 from a V8,I knew of a bloke who was always pulled over by cops in his HQ Premier because it had a bonnet scoop on it,the car was merely powered by a 186 C.I engine.
My opinion on Victorian laws is they're stupid, there speed cameras are set to catch people out who do 3 kms over the speed limit when the error set into the car speedos by the manufacturer is +/- 10 %,someone does 100 KPH and are clocked doing 110 KPH are booked even though there speedo reads 100 KPH.
Cars such as the Holden V8's are really geared for cruising & touring (have tall gearing),for example,I know a bloke with a 5 litre VS interceptor which is as quick as his wifes Nissan Pulsar SSS,why don't the cops pull people in little Nissans,Toyotas & Astras over which are just as quick?
These smaller cars may be geared differently (lower) and may not have as much useable power (i.e. topend power) as the 5 litre but I think they can still be as dangerous for an inexperienced driver.

05-02-03, 10:52 GMT+10#47 but 87VLT dont u think there are many drivers on their opens that are just as inexperienced and possibly even more so as drivers on their P's. i know there are exceptions but the generalisations enforced by the governemnt are getting nowhere in reducing road tolls. They need to introduce proper driver training and advanced driving courses should be essential no matter what car u drive. A hyundai excel can still flog through 60km/h zones at 100 and then have the driver lock upthe brakes and understeer into uncle joe and his three daughters..
I just think the whole system needs revising.

05-02-03, 13:28 GMT+10#48 I see that aswell. Hence why I made my last statement about the rules being made as a generlisation. Hence being stereotypical, hence being discriminating .... I was not aware of the siuation on these laws until a few months ago.

many? id say that would be a pretty insignificant percentage. logic suggests that a person who has been driving a car for a long period of time has more experience than someone who has not. laws cant cover for every single possibility but they cover the majority.

06-02-03, 08:48 GMT+10#53 yeh i agree that would be 'logical'. however we should know the world is not logical. i know of several people including my brother who is now on his opens and has driven very occasionaly and doesnt own a car. hes spent perhaps 100 hrs driving in the last 3 years.
im not saying the government should change the laws because of this minority, im saying they should change the laws to prevent ANYONE being inexperienced driving say a colt, let alone a high powered vechicle.

06-02-03, 09:50 GMT+10#54 so how would they base the law? on the amount of kms someone did? Would be easy for people to cheat log books. truckies do it all the time.

06-02-03, 23:35 GMT+10#56 I got done in my vlt....
When i tried to find out if it was too powerful they told me to work it out for myself as it wasn't on the list, 125fwkw per tonne. I look up the specs, 150kw and about 1460kg, thats under so i sent it back with relivant info saying i'll despute it and bout a year later got a letter saying it was cancelled, and it took so long cos the cop didn't file the paperwork, it was found by an audit!!!
Even though my car is more powerful than 150kw and would have been over the limit i got away with it.
I remember doing the sums for other models aswell and found that most V8's were leagal but were listed! ???
It's all pritty stuffed up and definatly needs to be revised.
Something like if the car can break traction in first gear by just accelerating then it's too powerful. But there is too many vairables involved in that too...

23-02-03, 16:34 GMT+10#57 well i would just like to say taht it doesn't matter wat car u drive like ppl have said i eamn i am a p plater have had my liscence for 4 months and i drive a n/a vl wit a sports exhaust as the only mod and i had an accident going threw an island to fast hit the gutter poped my tyres and buckled the rims and bent croos bar lucky i didn;t hurt anyone but this shows that even cars that are not considered high powered cars are dangerous. Even though i ahd been threw the same island before faster i just misjudged it this time and that is all it takes iu am not saying i am a bad driver i am just saying u need to think sometimes it is okay to give your car a go off the lights yet think b4 u go threw islands and round corners cause that is how i ad my accident. Thanx guys p.s i still think i am a good driver hehe
