I still think the complete turbo engine conversion is best, unless you are putting after market pistons, valves, injectors ecu and so forth in it as well....
If you do the job properly and put decent pistons and so forth in it will go better than a stock vlt....if you just bolt a turbo up, it will die a hell of a lot sooner...
why does it perform better though? is it just because a whole lot of new parts are being used or because it ends up having better specs? i thought the n/a engine was almost identical to the rb30et.
they have the same bottom end i think, but the top is fairly different....it will perform better if you use decent pistons, and rings, mainly due to a better piston, newness of parts, and everything will be claen....it would vertually need a whole new top end(check the bottom end of course for errors), even though there are shortcuts you can take, but if its apart once why not spend that little bit extra to do it properly....
I havent pulled my engine down before(yet), but when i do i will be rebuilding from a series 2 n/a block(due to how cheap it would be) and get the crank balanced, all new pistins rings, rods, seals, and definately a twin cam head....then i will have to go for some better engine management and fuel supply just to get it running properly...i am prob forgetting heaps here due to excessive alcohol consumption, but the point is "If youre gunna build one, dont take any shortcuts" save up a few months longer or do more overtime, cos it will p iss you off if you kill it in a week cos of a shortcut...
hmm, well i'm considering the options for when i can afford it. i realise you can get decent n/a VLs for around 4-5k, but i'm no mechanic so i probably wouldn't convert it myself (unless it's a lot simpler than i think it is).
with a conversion would you come out saving more money in the end?
i guess you'd also get an engine that's less likely to have been thrashed too if it was bought non turbo.
