Rotors sound like they're ready to give up and die.
Ok so I have this problem, I need to remove the factory head unit out of a VL Calais, and it's quite different to the other VL stereos I've taken out.. I can't find anything in the Audio section, and if I search 'VL calais stereo remove' (or anything more than 'VL calais stereo', which just brings up people posting "Check out this stereo in my VL calais") I get a 'Page cannot be displayed' message. Anyone know how to get it out? The stereo has a knob on the left and buttons all over the place.
from memory you undo the knobs. there will be some nuts behind those. you undo the nuts and the faceplate should slide off then you unplug it. by the way the search wont work if you enter "vl" in any of your searches.

That's how the non-Calais ones come out. They're easy. This is the factory one, but it's in a calais so it's mostly digital. If I don't type VL in the search then I get all this unhelpful info on VRs and ****!
Oh, and Aaron, it's someone elses car, he wants to put the stereo in his other Calais (I guess that one is ****ed?) and he's done an alright job on the dash and everything so I wouldn't want to break that either.
My factory head unit had a real small nut behind the unit you had to get down on the floor with a flash light and look all the way up from underneath the dash to see it

In the Calais? Did you use just a normal ring and open ender?

Brute Force......by far the easiest....bugga the factory unit....they are crap
Yeah I pulled the dash off the radio, leaving the radio just hanging there, and gave it a yank and snapped the bolt. Standard calais radio was crap, Optional (std on VK) MicroCommand wasn't.
anyone tried to install a new stereo into a VL? how did you do it/ i just used gorilla glue around the box frame thingie worked mint as no buggers can steal it
They are a bit of a prick, be good to know if anyone has got a decent solution. Does the Gorilla glue stop you getting it out too?
It sucks how the headunits don't slide back far enough into the dash either. I've heard of people using a heat gun to "reshape" the box thing (something to do with aircon?) that stops the unit sliding in all the way.
As for the security - I've gotten into the habit of removing my faceplate wherever I leave the car.
This isn't something I like to tell everyone, but oh well, I just have the head unit sitting loose in the hole in my 2L (It's too big with the bracket, and just a bit too small without it) so that's pretty poor.. and for the constant +12v I just stole the positive from the boot popper in the glove box.. I was 16 and lazy Who ever installed the stereo in my wagon managed to fit the bracket in, and surrounded it with silicon ****, which seems alright.. but when it came to getting it out all the glue had gone through the gaps and stuck to the head deck itself.. was a prick but after soaking it in CRC it eventually came out.

remove the center air con chute and use the vn one, same top size and smaller piping. When i installed car sterio's it was normal to cringe when someone said they had a holden or a mazda.....they would have to be the worst.
I also still do jobs for beer if your really affraid of it
