All depends on who you go to I guess, there's the cheap ****ty guys who are more than likely using the machines Ank mentioned, then there's the exact oposite. Just like anything to do with car modification.

I've driven heaps of times while drunk. I've never crashed. Therefore, it must be safe that drinking and driving is completely safe!
There's rarely been a thread on this forum about people themselves crashing while drunk.. therefore - it has to be safe!
Think about all the people employed in drive through bottle-o's that will loose thier job if no-one drove while drunk?

15-09-09, 11:22 GMT+10#62 I think if you have white walls on anything built after 1985 you deserve to be pulled over by the automotive fashion police and given a hard arse reaming.
That, or hopefully the tyre (which no matter what anybody on here says, has been weakened by the big gay process) blows out, and the car gets taken out with it in the resulting accident.

15-09-09, 16:38 GMT+10#71 Know for a fact they guarantee workmanship. Legality, unsure, he does have the form stating, as coptza said, that it is legal on cars that are manufactured before July 2009, but all comes down to how the cop wants to interperet it so unsure on that one. Safety, pretty sure yeah, as I said in another post he has sent off a few tyres to have the sidewall tested as he's sick of people going on about it reducing strength, so once those are back I'm sure he'll back the safety 100%.
Am getting mine redone tonight as I kinda did a huge skid on the old tyres :P so if anyone would like me to check anything with him, let me know. Is, as far as I know, the biggest whitewall business in Melbourne at present so would probably be the best place to get their side of the story from.

Worst. Comparison. Ever. But I'll play along anyway cause I'm bored
You're saying you can drive drunk. Obviously there's people who can't. Which just proves my point that all these backyard-spec whitewallers MAY be cutting into the actual sidewall and reducing strength instead of just lightly buffing away the writing itself. Ya know, since we're playing the whole "Kinda comparable but really not the same thing" game.
You honestly think everyone who goes through a drive-thru bottle shop drives drunk? Jesus christ that's probably the worst comparison I've heard in a long time.
This guy's blow out, to me, looks to be entirely camber related. Sure the whitewalls didn't help, but **** if you're putting that much pressure on the sidewall in the first place, scraping a gutter is probably going to do the exact same thing, since, you know, it basically IS the exact same thing as buffing writing off a sidewall. You can still read the writing through the wall 95% of the time depending on type of tyre, that's how little it's taken back.
Anyway, I'm off to get my walls done now. Hopefully my tyres don't blow up.

15-09-09, 16:55 GMT+10#72 It would be interesting to see if he had documentation on it and who had certified the tyres as being legal and safe.
So far we have two tyre manufacturers who say it is dangerous and compromises the characteristics of the tyre.

thats bullshit and i love whitewalls,
Its got nothing to do with when the car was manufactured, its gotta do with the when the tyre was, a car that was manufactured in 2009 could have tyres on it that were made pre 2009
makes no sense just some bullsh!t some guy made up. But yeah as you said it aint hard to change wheels over and clear it then put your old rims back on.

15-09-09, 17:25 GMT+10#74 I can understand why people on forums are defending their own and or mates business' and so forth, BUT it is plain and simple, whitewalls are now a defectable item.
Once walled, the tyre has been altered from manufacturer specifications which then puts it in breach of the ADR rulings, whether this be grinding into the wall or simply removing any specifications such as load rating etc...
The year of manufacture of the vehicle has nothing to do with this breach.
My old man confirmed this for me last week and I have also spoken to the tmu guys, memo's were sent out to all stations alerting them to this and as a result people are being done for it.
Also, I know everyone says just change parts out for insurance purposes, but in the event of an accident, even if your car is legal height etc... and you are unable to swap wheels before the car is inspected, your insurance will default on you due to the breach of ADR guidelines and you can also be charged as a result.
Just for the record, I'm also a fan of whitewalls.
