yep so long as the engines pass the same emissions stuff, it doesnt' matter whether newer/older etc..
I think the "older engine - newer car" rule is just a bit dumbened down and generalized. (i.e. - it wouldn't apply if you wanted to put a 86 vl motor into an 87 vl )

quick update
- new stock valve springs in
- lifters got dismantled, inspected, cleaned, and re-assembled
- rockers etc also copped a nice clean while everything was out
- R33 alternator is in
- BOV line changed to mostly steel line, to try get it a bit more responsive.
Just gotta fix this speedo signal (there's a divide by 5 circuit in the VN dash that I need to pass the speedo signal through before it goes to the ECU) - seems to be broken in my dash, will replace and see how it goes.
Will be fitting 21psi spring in the wastegate and hoping to hell that the head gasket holds! lol - worst case, I suppose it's better to blow a head gasket than a piston.
- how much success have people had with stock/ACL gaskets in the past? with no o-ringing or head studs or anything? - and i mean, in a properly tuned car, not something that blew gaskets cause of detonation.
- do these gaskets have a tendency to blow out under high cylinder pressures? or has noone ever really been silly enough to try this much boost on a stock head gasket, and they just get upgraded prior to big(ish) boost?
some pics of pretty clean valve train:

Speedo signal is fixed, etc - still having issue with car leaning out when thermos are on, though
Other than that, it's booked in for dyno time this Saturday! going to a shop familiar with nistune - so I think i'll just handball the tuning to them and sit back and watch the magic happen. Will be cranking the boost as much as possible and seeing how the car responds! - the goal is still 20psi +
If all goes well @ the dyno (i.e. no blown gaskets or motors ) - and if the weather holds up, I'll be heading up to the strip on Sunday to get some times down!

Made 286? rwkw on the dyno on 20psi (but forgot to save the run to print) - so here's the printout from one or two before @ 274rwkw (still on 20psi)
Also went to calder today...
unfortunately the best I could pull was a 12.3 @ 113mph.
best mph I could get was 115.
Whether it be the way the car is setup (it's not lol) or just my poo driving, I couldn't get it to really 'bite' off the line when I stalled it up and built a good 6-7psi off the line (it would just torch ET streeters ) 60' times were all 2.x
I believe that with that MPH it should be capable of a high 11?
I did hear it knocking a few times, though, half way down the track- unfortunately it's a bit hard to hear it knock nice and early when you have a full face helmet on and are hikin' lol! - I'm guessing that with that boost level and todays warmer temps - it just wasn't really loving life!
I pulled the timing back about 4 degrees for the next run, and dropped a bit on the trap speed.
... the bad news is that after I drove the car home, there was a bit of water pooled under the car ... a quick bit of thrashing revealed that it had finally happened - yep - it's blown a head gasket
I think that if I had of been a little bit more cautious today and actually backed off a bit more and got concerned when it was knocking (I thought $100 motor vs $65 entry fee + $60 fuel...... it's not worth looking after the motor at the risk of not getting your moneys worth for the runs haha) - it probably would have lasted a whole heap longer! (presuming i was being careful!)
all in all, though - I reckon that's a mission accomplished from me - while I could change the gasket and get it back up and running, I massively cbf.... and I have another motor on the stand just about ready to drop in - which should make a fair bit more power than this one
So.... the conclusion to this experiment is that;
you can make high 200's and run a low 12 (or high 11?) with a completely stock, hi-comp motor (stock cam, gasket etc) and the right bolt ons... 20psi and a bit of time
however; at this level there is a very small margin of error in the tune... and there probably isn't all that much more power to be made from it (on pump fuel anyway) - the runs were done on shell v-power (98)
Hope this thread comes in useful for the next person to ask 'how much can a hi-comp motor take?'

what springs did you have in the back when you ran at calder?
Just some lovells fe-2 equivalent - stock rear springs might have been a better option, but at the same time I have to work out exactly what I'm doing with the car - ultimately it's just a street car, and I'd like it to run the time exactly how it is on the street.... i.e. drive there, pull the hub caps off, and go racing... adjustable upper arms might be on the cards though, when the new engine is in - along with some koni adjustable shocks front and rear.

Thanks man - yeah it could have worked out better.. I could fix it and head back to crack an 11 with some better driving and a car that's setup a bit better - but I have to draw the line somewhere.
Tune wise, on the day @ calder - it was tuned for 11.8:1 AFR's at full noise, with only 6 deg timing on 20psi (and about 11 deg timing at 15psi)
It wasn't THAT hot on Saturday - and with that sort of tune I wouldn't have thought it would have damaged anything - but i suppose high comp, high boost, warm days and fanging a car with a completely stock motor is asking for trouble really lol

I wouldn't have thought it would ping with those sort of mixtures. How much fuel was in the tank? 113mph should see a 11.9 - 12.0
Very interesting writeup by the way
115mph was the highest mph of the day - so a high 11 should have been on the cards with a bit more traction etc.
Just for reference - here's what the gasket looks like (both #4 and #6 are a bit pear-shaped - picture is of #6)
The flame rings are still perfectly in tact with no obvious signs of detonation (as far as my knowledge lets me believe!).. they are just completely deformed
