Well I have a RB20DET and it goes pretty well for what it is. Bigger turbo, 3" exh, EMS, FMIC. 12.9@111mph These have a very strong bottom end can cop a caning, mine had stock internals, 18psi boost and revved mostly to 8000 sometimes 8500 and lasted 5years. A RB25 would be good for the street with mild power upgrades, revving to 7000rpm but they dont have the strongest bottom end. I am building a RB30/26 but they cost heaps to build. I just wish I had bought a 1JZ back in 2001 when I did my conversion!

Typically around about 700hp real crank horsepower i think your on borrowed time, probally conrod wise first, might get 12mnths out of it though. I tend to disagree slightly with you on this one Darren . One of my customers owns the white Pro Tek Supra. It has laid down 640 rwhp / 478rwkw on C16 in race tune. The car has no internal mods at all and runs a std 6spd manual. Runs twin 440hp Garret rollers, custom manifold, bigger injectors, FMIC, 2X 044's and a microtech. Thats it! Car has laid down a best of 10.12 @ 138 mph. They did in excess of 50 passes and god knows how many dyno runs with the only issue being a weep from the rear main seal. It has been used for a daily driver for over 2 years in between racing at a conservative 270rwkw. As a maintenance thing they pulled the motor for inspection! In the end they simply replaced the gaskets and main bearings as a precaution and slotted it back in. And this motor has near on 90k on it! Straight back out to the track and it is realing off consistant low 10's in the low 140mph. Once it runs a 9 he will stop racing it! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I am now going the route of an RB25/RB30 conversion for a VL wagon street car couldn't give stuff what it does on a quarter long as in hangs the ass out and is fun to drive. I have just brought an RB25de complete engine 70ks on it $700nz which is with a 4wd drive stagea front end so plan on selling the front diff CV's hubs gear box to recoup some of the costs. I’ve got a couple of link ECU's kicking around but will probably remap a standard ECU to suit. Turbo and manifolds around $1000 or so brand new so that side of it isn't too bad. my first VL project was an L20DET running around 20 PSI never had it on the dyno was tunned on the road the old fashion way, no idea of the power but it was plenty and was a heavy pig of an engine with ridicules turbo lag. The major cost in doing these things is all the small stuff that you don't think about when you start out. Really we are better off just to buy a R33 which is already fast reliable and handle pretty good stock, but how boring is that. Ill try to track the total cost as I go, ill be doing as much of the work as I can myself, the goal is between 200-250 kw@rw shouldn’t be a big ask, Any more than that and ill be having gear box and diff issues (has any one mated a T5 to an RB30 I have one lying around).

Obviously you have never done up a VL turbo before... nope i havent..... i just say i got a 26/30 for the fun of it coz im hektik... if i had've done sh*t right, this is how it couldve panned out for me. i bought my "calais" turbo for 13k. had a rajab built rb30 "10 second package" (mild bottom end work, gt35/40), then theres my gearbox which is a fully manualised 3spd trimatic 3800rpm stall... 13grand for my car sell rb30et for bugger all, 2500? (so i wouldve had a bit more money to play with..) buy a microtech ecu for that much plus extra crap like coils etc. my engine is costing me $8500-9000 im getting my stainless piping done for free and "some other crap" could be re-used and i have a manifold for a 26head... so its still around 20k, give or take.... i dont know where the figure of 50k or even 80k came from, give me a break. if i was spending 50k i wouldnt want it to be on a fk'n vl if sum1 was to spend even 50k on a vl you would want it doing 8 to 9second passes and everything on it being show quality... plus some but either way, the point of my argument is that it wouldnt cost u 50k ffs...or the claimed 50+k for a twincam vl turbo.. Back on subject. I am currently building an RB20. Standard internals, Just bolt ons. I have pretty hi hopes of what this engine can achieve when setup correctly. Should be on the rollers by the end of next week. I will keep you guys posted. Hopefully its not a boat anchor like most people seem to agreee on.

It has been used for a daily driver for over 2 years in between racing at a conservative 270rwkw And theres you answer , everyone i know runs there car at 400rwkw+ day in day out, and are thrashed daily. I am not talking about running 700hp at a track, i am talking day in day out on pump fuel. Even my ****ty cast bottom end Rb30 did over 200 passes on the street, As well as flat out freeway runs on fullboost. Personally i am not into the whole c16 race tune, no exhaust thing i like my power there all the time and you have to think smarter Runs twin 440hp Garret rollers, custom manifold, bigger injectors, FMIC, 2X 044's and a microtech. Thats it!. Thats actually a fair bit, its only missing cams.I know the car, its tough and launches like a demon, top stuff! can't wait to see it do 9's, love my JZA80's Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

out of the 'cheapies' (20, 25 and 30), RB25det is definitly the best imo RB26 would be awesome, if you can afford it all and the hybrid engines (25/30, 26/30) can be INSANE, but need to be done right, and could possibly cost a fair bit of money also

lets just say 20 grand can by you 400 gobbies, 400 gobbies would buy you a mild street style setup from engine to diff, but it cost easily more then 600 gobbies to build a full on setup with any engine combo.

Although not as bad as around a year or 2 ago. But obviously they're going to get cheaper with age ... untill they become rare.
