29-08-07, 17:07 GMT+10#61 mate you are crazy if you are replacing the Motec with the Microtech, why didn't you just get it tuned somewhere else if you weren't happy? Ah well, you're car and you're the one who's gotta drive it in the end. Heaps of Microtech people are happy, but my guess is they probably haven't experienced a higher end computer properly set up and running.

Or justified the extra 100s required to purchase, install and tune these high end ECUs?....
Have you ever driven a car with a properly tuned and set up Microtech? Arent you running a middle of the road ECU? EMS is not something I would think of when people throw the term 'high end' around.

29-08-07, 17:25 GMT+10#65 i dont think jack ever said he was using a high end ecu, just answering the question which is about microtech, regardless of what ecu he has or prefers he is only stating his knowledge on microtech

There are many reasons people go for Microtech, and as you mentioned, price is one.
I personally couldn't justify (or afford!) the price of a high end ecu- hence why i have an EMS and not an Autronic or Wolf etc in my car. I never pretended EMS was high end (although if you open the units up- it's far better than alot construction wise)- if i had the money it would be out and an SMC would be in faster than you'd believe.
All i am saying is i did alot of homework on the topic- and i am simply answering the question for which the thread was created to ask: "Why don't people like Microtech?"
No need to get aggressive on me man, that wasn't a very nice post. Yes i have driven cars that have Microtechs, i have spoken with people who tune them, i have spoken with Microtech and i have literally seen inside one of their units. I also have a fair few friends who own them- i'm not just being a groupie here!

Just rattling off what I know from my experience having had one in a previous car, you seem so down on them when they are proven to work very effectively. I'd think working for a well known magazine now you'd need to fairly careful about what 'opinions' you post on public forums? Might get yourself in trouble? Haha.......
And E-Z theres a difference between knowledge and opinion man....
**** some people are overly sensitive.

29-08-07, 17:45 GMT+10#68 i just got a Lt10. for my 14 sec 1/4 its perfect.
I have bigger injectors for safeness, and i hate AFMs. this fixed both.

i was wondering about this one day and came across this i thought it was a very good read
http://www.sdsefi.com/techseq.htm
after reading that it changed my mind about sequencial injection and that standard batch will will do for my car. LT10 will be my choice of ECU mainly because of the price.
Who has a 6 Sequential ECU and actually have it tune in Sequential injection

Price isn't always the thing, someone has already mentioned it, UD LOSE ran a microtech (I use this as an example cause its someone I know, not just someone i "heard of") and that thing has a very-very-very expensive motor, and with the amount of money the guy spends I'm pretty sure he could afford to put motec m800s in all his cars.... and he still chose to run a microtech in UD LOSE, oh and an LT8 powered his 355 twin turbo setup which makes 1000rwhp give or take a few hp....
Im sure he has his reasons, and theyd be pretty genuine, but in the end its still an opinion.
like for example, i told my tuner (who also tuned sum of my friends car) "oh yeah, and i got rid of the motec, whoops!"
He was pretty pissed off.... but ohwell. I got rid of it cause i figured if i wanted to run multiple coils (which i HAD to do) on the rb26/30 i needed to fork out heaps of money for all this extra-"random" but necessary equipment, that kinda pissed me off....
so basically, price was a factor in the end for me... so i jumped off the "motec boat", damn
also i didnt buy the microtech ltx12 + coils, it was "given" to me
just dont ask me what i did to get it though
FARK!

You are so wayyy off, No matter what ECU you put in a Rotary they are NOT a reliable performance engine, and generally do blow the apex seals.
I hate people who give **** to ecu's just cause the people who work on there cars dont tune them, so they THINK everything else is ****.

29-08-07, 19:49 GMT+10#74 I had a SMC for a while, but it was not as good on cold start as people on here would have you beleive.
the haltech on the other hand was very nice upon start up, and overall much smoother in operation.
The smc was tuned by JPC who run it on their racecar so they know how to get the best out of it..

Robs car is goin to run autronic i think but when i asked john what he would reccomend he said microtech simply because of ease of use and perfect for my needs each to there own with ecus as everyones needs are different, different brands cater for this
and different prices reflect this

30-08-07, 08:23 GMT+10#76 I had a ruff time with microtech on my SOHC setup. Running 1000cc inj, and big cam and custom intake. It just didnt like cold starts at all. Didnt want to idle at all. It was bad pulling up to a set of light, coz you had to use the brake and gas pedal to keep it running.
Changed to Haltec E11xV2 and havent look back, But now going the RB26 head with the STD GTR intake..... we will see how the idle's then. May have to change intakes setup.

30-08-07, 08:43 GMT+10#77 I'm not saying Microtech are ****, they are cheap- and you get what you pay for. I'm sure if Microtech wanted to build an ECU as powerful as a Motec or Autronic they would- but that would defeat the target market they have built their branding in the direction of! They make their money and build their (strong) reputation upon selling solid although basic computers- and there is nothing wrong with that.
All ECUs have a place on the market, Microtech is an entry level system- they are probably better value for money than any other computer, but they are not nearly as "good" as many of the higher end computers... if the Microtech was as good then the others wouldn't exist, as why would anyone spend $4000 more than they need to on a computer?!
Microtechs are great because they are easy to tune, and good tuners of the things are thick on the ground.
Alot of people forget that in the eastern states we are lucky enough to have ample tuners with a massive spread covering specialists for all make and model of aftermarket Computer- giving us a massive spread of choices.
Anyway i didn't mean to start an argument, and i'm sorry if i offended anyone who has a Microtech by stating that i believe their $1200 system isn't as good as a $3000+ one. My bad i should have watched how i worded things a little better.

30-08-07, 10:36 GMT+10#79 Microtech is a good ECU - the Rajab VL went 8.50's with it so it cant be that bad however they have found Motec to be one step ahead overall. I guess it comes down to the tune/tuner as well, my mate has a microtech in his skyline and it goes really hard, REALLY HARD! drives really well, cold start n all however another mate has had his done from somewhere else and it stinks. IMO you get what you pay for and Motec gets my vote, the new RB30 motec kit is awesome.

Hey morgz,
Was this ever back to the tuner to get the cold start rectified? Every Ecu on the market should be able to use cold start correction perfectly.

Richie,
Was your Microtech running sequential or multipoint? In multipoint any ECU should struggle with 1000cc incectors on a 3lt engine at idle and low engine speeds. You get to a point where the management physically cant open and close the injector for a short enough period to the the desired A/F.
I had 870cc and injection time of 1.15 ms and still running .85 Lambda. (rich)
Anything shorter in ms and the injector would not open have enough time to physically open and close. And yes it was a pig too. I have just bought and almost fitted an LT 12 with the same 870cc injectors. But running full sequential. I expect perfect mixtures.
