24-09-07, 15:16 GMT+10#63 Had a VP 5L, bit of work done. Liked the look of the VL's, but hated the interiors. Went for a run in a Black Calais Turbo, with a fair bit of work. I got over the look of the interior and swapped the guy on the spot...
Now I got 2 VL's, one VLT Calais mock, and one berlina ****ter as the daily. Just love skatin...

25-09-07, 10:24 GMT+10#64 I was about to head off to Canada for a year (this would have been late '86) and the old man was looking for a new car. He knew the local dealer pretty well so he brought a 5.0 and Turbo Calais to the house for him to try out.
Dad figured he wouldn't drive the turbo car over 2500rpm so didn't really need the turbo (yes, we had words afterwards !) and bought the V8 instead. That thing wouldn't have pulled the skin off custard.
Good news about that day was that I got to take a brand new Calais Turbo for a spin in the Adelaide Hills (Does this make me the first person to drive a Calais Turbo on this site ? ). To say I was impressed after driving a 4.2 LX Torana hatch was an understatement. I almost couldn't wait to get back from Canada and buy my own.
Anyway, back from o/s, new job, still living at home, but the budget couldn't stretch to anything more exotic than an SL Turbo, even had to delete the aircon they cost so much by that stage......
That'll be twenty years ago come December.

pretty much a mates hdt ss mockup, a mates turbo exec and then my fathers walky inspired me.

25-09-07, 13:07 GMT+10#67 I was also raised in a holden family. My "AUNTY"! having a VL 5.0,VN SS and VR SS.when she had the VL i didnt think much of it.i was around 7 or 8.Thought it was ugly.Anyways it was full burgandy bumpers and all,Maroon Calais Interior,Side and rear venetians.Lookin back at that today i wish i knew the value LOL.because it was full immaculant, orig paint and all seemed like it just came out of the holden factory.this was in New Zealand anyways.Ive been in Australia for only 2 years and 1 day when i was i think 14 (im 16 now) I could here this Odd sound coming from behind me.
I turn around to see this Yellow VL with the rear slapped on its ass front was stock height and massive front mount intercooler driven by what would of seemed to be a lebo/turk with his hat all the way up(Like muzzas) and another 3 passengers with their hats up Dropping Doses (Which was the 1st time i had eva heard/heard of 1).I Stood there stareing at it go past speechless as he continued to drop doses the whole way down a main road.i forget the plates it had buh it was in sunshine im pretty sure he was from the area.
I know thats what every1 hates buh thats what got me into VL's jus hearing the dose and ever since then i wanted 1 and i got 1 a year later.
I now know alot more about the car and have big plans for my next 1 which i am buying within a week.

25-09-07, 14:13 GMT+10#68 what got me into VL's?
Funnily enough, the fact they were turbo and came in bright yellow.
Now that I have a VL though, the body shape of them is awesome.
Turbo and a respray will come later on.

25-09-07, 16:27 GMT+10#69 I had always wanted a VK, But i was still at school at the time and had very little money, My father was trying to sell this beat up old Venetian Red on Madiera (Red Interior) Calais, but it was dirt cheap, ended up buying it because I needed a car. Still have it to this day, and am now on my 3rd VL (a 2 Litre Berlina) , theyre nothing but trouble but i never learn.......

25-09-07, 20:24 GMT+10#70 Got settlement after I took Austrade to court in 1989, got a nice document
and used it to leverage a deal with Brian Gardners and a finance co, no one
else would do it at that time and my previous car for two months needed a
welded up steering box as it came away from the cross member (Valiant) and
the one before that blew a piston... Ford escort 1600 dble carbie etc
On reflection though the salesmen were a bunch of sharks, wynns, window
tints, rust proofing <guh> all a total waste of money !

26-09-07, 12:54 GMT+10#73 My mum had a light green Executive when i was 13, she used to drop me off at school in Ballajura and everyone would always stare at it because it was immaculate. Thats when i decided i'd get one, because they get attention even when they are stock.

26-09-07, 21:42 GMT+10#78 Australian pride leaned me towards Holden for starters
and also the common knowledge that VLs are 'easy' to do up, and so many options are available with them
cheapness and readily available everything for them
And lastly ......rwd, good looks, perfect size

26-09-07, 21:57 GMT+10#79 1. Had kids so could no longer drive Rotaries (headaches, fuel fumes etc).
2. HEAPS on the road so parts are cheap to come by.
3. HEAPS are modified so aftermarket parts are easy to come by.
4. 1/2 decent family hacks.
5. Mr's is a Holden freak.
6. Probly a dozen other excuses I could make up haha.
BUT I really don't know why I bothered hey, lol.
The build has gone way over board & over budget and it is now too good to use as a daily or for the Mr's to drive anyway. So I should have just bought a Rota for myself...
