just went for a cruise in the VL when the light comes on, i just give the fuel guage a little tap from the glass and it gets contact inside the dash so it reads how much is left! this works if ur a lazy prick and dont want to remove the cluster out to properly fix this problem... LOL! ill do it soon... one day... just adding it to my "VL needs this" list!

Done the fix on my Calais and Berlina and everything works a treat except the oil gauge doesnt work on either of the dashes. Not overly fussed as at least now I wont run out of fuel. Cheers

Hey mate sounds like your fuel sender unit has had it. Get it replaced, its located where the internal fuel pump is in the fuel tank.

thanks guys for all your positive feedback. From all your responses it seems that this is the main problem with VL gauges. Mine is still perfect and never drops to zero and is very accurate. There cant be many VLs out there with accurate fuel gauges. i did this fix 2 months ago and it fixed my gauge, been working ever since perfectly, but one question. I got a shift light connected to my wires behind the dash and ever since i did this mod it doesnt work no more? i checked all the connections and they were fine? could it b the tacho wire?

maybe try a different earth. i know a few people using the piller for their tacho earth... One thing to remember. VL electronics are very touchy you can never be too sure you have things right

hi guys, having trouble with fuel gauge. i will fill the car up to the top. then i notice as im driving the needle moves a bit at a time. sounded like my car was guzzlineg but wasnt. i was on nearly RED i filled up and only took 40ltrs. so just wanted to know if its my cluster (do the fuel gauge fix) or if its my sender? thanks

Sounds like my Calais, spat fuel at me and wouldn't take any more, jumped in and the guage only went to 3/4. Then it went down pretty quick, dropped to 1/4 after 100k's or so. Guess it's the sender, but maybe the guage is out of cal? Are the able to be calibrated? If not I'll go for the sender. Will look into the mod from this thread too, like the idea.

just thought i'd bump this thread as my fuel guage is dodgy too... When i go to fill it up, the nozzle clicks and wont fill up anymore, but when i drive away the fuel guage only reads 3/4 full! And also, the needle constantly drops down to zero and needs to be bashed to get it to respond, so i will try the soldering method, just wondering if that will also fix the other problem, or is a seperate way of fixing that???

Thats interesting. My Berlina won't take anymore than 40L into the tank (standard 63L tank). Perhaps the vacuum hoses were reinstalled the wrong way by the panel shop.... Anyway, I managed to squeeze 55L into it once, and it started leaking at the seams by the time I got home. Sounds like your sender is fairly worn, marshal89. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
