23-08-05, 22:30 GMT+10#61 yep, get whatever model powerFC corresponds with your head. make sure you the correct series loom too, the R33 came out in a series one and series 2 like the VL, there are differences in the coil pack arrangement with regards to an external ignitor.

24-08-05, 11:21 GMT+10#62 yep power-fc is the best to run it on. There's a guy on ebay selling them but if you use an auction agent to bid at the japanese yahoo auctions you can pick them up with a hand controller for $500.
As appose to ebay's $1000+ price. Its also good for injectors, a full set of 444cc GTR injectors will go for like $50 second hand.

24-08-05, 13:08 GMT+10#63 Nice thanks very much... StockyMcStock, I dont actually have an R33 Loom, I only bought a complete RB25DET (minus loom, computer and turbo). So I am confused now as to what loom I am after as well as what PowerFC. Is there a way of telling what series my head is? When I bought it, it came with two different sets of coils, one set doesnt fit. It didnt come with an external module like an R32 though.
James 03, When you say I need to use an auction agent in Japan how would I get in contact with one? Is this just an importer pretty much?

24-08-05, 16:49 GMT+10#64 Yeah sort of but there not based in Australia like an importer.
They are based in japan and basically bid at the japanese yahoo auctions for you at a small fee. There are a few of them around but this is what me and a couple of my other mates use:
http://www.rinkya.com/
Over on the SAU forums quite a few sponsors just import stuff over from them on a regular basis. So what you do is bid on the item, win it, then the seller will send it to agent Rinkya in Japan who send it over here via fedex or something.
Anyway check it out.

24-08-05, 16:50 GMT+10#65 ooh - tough one. the S1 had an external ignitor pack, and the S2 were built into the coils. i guess they would look a bit different, and maybe so would the plugs on the loom for that matter - but i couldn't tell you what the differences were.
are you sure it's an R33 engine, not an R32? if it's an R32 then the coils should be right either way - just get an R32 loom and powerFC.

24-08-05, 17:00 GMT+10#66 Stocky: I was told it was out of an R33, I didnt think that R32s came out with VCT RB25DETs? But the oil pump did fit on my RB30E so im not sure, I would have assumed it to be S1? I will check the plugs on the ignitors next chance I get.
James 03: Cheers I am checking out that Rinkya site now, looks good

24-08-05, 17:21 GMT+10#67 the s1 loom has a big wide plug for the ignitor,the s2 loom doesnt

24-08-05, 17:24 GMT+10#68 sorry yeah, if it has VCT then it's an R33 (or 34) head. duz360 is right about the plug - the S2 plugs would (i THINK) just join up to the main loom, whereas the S1 will have a short length of wires, then a big wide plug for the ignitor.

24-08-05, 17:32 GMT+10#69 Ah so external ignitor pack == series 1 ? Looks like that is what mine is. Just need to find a loom now (proving difficult!).
BTW costs so far
$900 for head / turbo / manifolds / injectors
$100 for block
$3000-$3500 to put it all together (engineering place has told me that, including forged pistons, head gasket, and a few custom parts they prefer to use (like pins, etc)).
$927 - PowerFC
$600 - splitfire ignition
Dropping most of it off tomorrow night to be put together.

Sounding good Gav, looks like you'll have it done before me i reckon, will hopefully be picking the head up this weekend so then i only have the little things to get after that!

24-08-05, 20:21 GMT+10#71 ive done this also at the end of last year, it made 175 rwkw at 10 psi and 480 nm of torque,on a stock rb25 turbo, manifold, inlet plenum, injectors with an auto. it now has all the goodies and hoping for sum real good power figures in weeks to come.

24-08-05, 22:42 GMT+10#72 platinum: why did you choose the splitfire coils? are you planning on running large amounts of boost?
oh and where did you see them for $600!?

Well I had a bit of a look for coilpacks, everyone seems to want heaps for a full (second hand) set, it seems like if I have to buy some I might as well get a decent replacement for a similar price. Thats the price they have them for on edit: meant to say on greenline.jp
And yeah I guess I'll be running relativly high boost eventually.

25-08-05, 18:13 GMT+10#74 I don't see value for money in $600 coils, when you could configure a wasted spark coil arrangment with leads, for peanunts with similar spark energy.

25-08-05, 18:16 GMT+10#75 rb30-power i see your point but i'd be willing to spend that to keep the stock configuration and neatness (no leads etc) and use a powerfc (not sure if they work with other coils?)...

25-08-05, 18:44 GMT+10#76 yeah,i always say there are 3 things you need to make an engine work.
air, fuel and spark.
increase them all and you have big power.

25-08-05, 21:27 GMT+10#77 I have never found waste spark coils to be sufficent for anything over 400rwhp in a 6 cylinder appliction, and the plug gaps were minumal at that power, and inconsistant. I have used falcon and commodore coil packs, same deal with both. Most waste spark coils aren't designed to be fired twice as often as they normally would, which I believe they do when set up on an aftermarket computer, and I will steer clear of them on any performance engine in the future. These were experiences from my own engine also, not a friend of a friend type stuff.
I believe a single coil, or full multi coil is the way to go, bu in this instance impossible. Cheapest solution is go to a wrecker and get 6 EA falcon coils, should cost you $10 each or so, and they are genuine bosch HEI coils, they have the nice little bosch injctor plug on them, and I made 520rwhp with my falcon with a SINGLE stock one until I had to put CDI on it, even then it was fine with the crane Hi6 and stock coil.

25-08-05, 21:46 GMT+10#78 So you're suggesting 6x EA falcon coils will work just fine instead of going to the effort of trying to find a set of skyline ones? Sounds pretty cheap if that's the case!

25-08-05, 22:38 GMT+10#79 platinum i'm not sure if the powerFC will like that kind of thing. all coils are different and i think the powerFC will just close up shop if it sees something else in there with a different resistance. having said that, it'd probably be pretty easy to get it working with some kind of circuit which tricked the computer into thinking it was running normally.

see i don't get this part at all. how does a VL turbo produce 400rwhp with no spark breakdown on a single coil? it's firing 6 plugs bloody fast (325 times a second at redline) but has no problems? is there different types of coils or what?
oh and another question: do you guys reckon spark breakdown is due to the coil being unable to recharge quick enough (high RPM) or because of high cylinder pressures causing the spark to have trouble jumping the gap? cause if it's the former, 6 VL coils would be kickass.

26-08-05, 22:27 GMT+10#80 I know what you are saying, and I don't know if its becuase waste spark coils are designed to not work like a single coil, but I have tested them on a few of my own engines, and only after I had found out that they didn't work, that other proffesional shops tell me that yeah, they didn't think they were reliable over 400rwhp either, in their experience.
There may be someone out there that has a better experience, I'm not saying all are bad, possible one is, but I know teh falcon and commode ones didn't work of my motec with individual igniters and setup properly.
