Ok I worked it out. Had to pull the axle again and assemble it all on the backing plate prior to bolting it all on. Have heard that Im going to need a master cylinder without a "residual pressure sheet valve" as my current one would cause the rear brakes to lock on all the time. Any truth in this?

Any truth in this? Yes that is true Aido. Drum brake master cyls put a bit of constant pressure on the rear drums. I used a drum housing, didnt grind anything off and just used disc bearings.

Anyone got a step-by-step order in which its done? you didnt happen to take any photos of the 3mm lip you had to grind off? I want to know what it looks like

It sits right on the edge of the axle tube and fits inside the backing plate for the drum backing plates. The reason you have to grind it off it because the hole in the centre of the disc backing plate is smaller. Just tap the axle studs out of the end of the housing and grind the end of the housing back till the whole surface is flat.

The axles in the disc and drum are exactly the same. The only thing different is the bearing seals because it doesnt have that that plate thingy. They cost about $90, depending on where you go. And then you have to get them fitted to your axles if you dont have a oil press.

The backing plate that the caliper bolts to? No worries Vl_Nick Cheers for the reply Matt. I tried to fit them without grinding the lip off but the disc backing plates wouldnt fit up flush against the axle housing and resulted in a heap of in/out play in the axle. Did you use VL or VN gear with yours? Is it possible to modify the drum master to use with a disc setup? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

me n my Sis's BF just swapped a cpmplete drum diff to a disc rear, bolted it all up, needed a rear disc handbrake cable. DID NOT change the master cyl and i get NO brake rubbing at all. So if any1 has a complete rear disc diff with the hubs n calipers an all then i would suggest doing that And as for it breaking 'alot' better, its definatly better but what i like about it is if u brake hard once with drums they get hot and squeek until they cool down, the discs wont do that incase u didnt figure, the rear disc diff i put in was from a VL, not vn or anything else. VL calais Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I need to know the complete opposite (didnt wanna start a new thread so added it here): I have 28spline axles which came from a disk diff (obviously) and I am putting them into my drum diff with 28spline centre (3.89 from a skyline). Will the drum brakes bolt up alright with these axles or will I need to change something? I have the 25 spline and 28 spline axles sitting next to each other and the 28spline axles are about 1/2inch - 3/4inch longer then the 25 spline. Need to know asap... Thanks!

Thanks! sounds like you have vn axles and they will be no good as they are to long. also if it was from a disk diff you will need to change the bearings and seals to the drum type.

They came from a VL V8 diff... Not a VN So changing the bearings and seals will that shorten the axle that little bit that I need?

ok, if they came from a vl v8 diff just change the bearing and seals

Ok, cheers. Are diff shops the only place that can supply these bearings and seals? Or can I get them from certain otehr places (ie. on the weekend?)
