15-05-09, 12:43 GMT+10#81 My car should be back next Friday, will post pics then.
I have gone for the through parcel shelf option, similar to ISL33P and robp30L, with the addition of a B pillar diagonal.

25-05-09, 12:30 GMT+10#86 BUMP would like to know that also? This thread is very informative.
Another question, to take roof lining out dont the front and rear windscreens have to come out? ISLEEP, are you putting roof lining back in or just leaving it? Would be a nightmare to put back in I would have thought?

26-05-09, 17:18 GMT+10#88 nah, the windows can come out without the lining. I am putting the roof lining back in, just have to figure out what i am doing at the front where the braces are. not that hard really, just as easy as installing. the cage doesnt interfere with where it all goes so its not bad at all.
if you like, give me a buzz on saturday and you can come past to check it out, you'll get a better idea once you see it all.

Yeah, all steel. Didn't like the price of chromoly! Not sure exactly how much length is in there; when I pick it up Saturday I'll get the invoice and try to work out how much weight I've added.

You can remove and replace the roof lining without either screen coming out. But the screens come out to do the cage, so they can gain access to all the welds. I opted out of the roof lining because I wanted to cage to be tagged to the roof a bit more (you can see heaps on the A pillars, and it's also tagged at the top of the C pillars). Increases body rigidity.

30-05-09, 13:30 GMT+10#92 Ended up being about 17 metres, according to the fabricator. My maths is too poor to know how much that weighs. 1Kg a metre = 17Kg, 2Kg a metre = 34Kg, 3Kg a metre = 51Kg, etc etc etc.

31-05-09, 23:26 GMT+10#93 Mild steel is around $10 a metre, chromoly $18-20, there is about 16-20 metres in an extensive cage, meaning $200 materials vs $400. I hardly see how chromoly is expensive, the reason that fabricators charge so much more is not becuase of the cost of material, its the perfect fitment of every bar for tig welding, and the time in tig welding, vs running around it with the mig and the size of gaps that it fills.
Thats some serious A pillar bracing 5spdvl, did you ask for that or did they do it because they thought it needed it?? I think its a little overkill for the integrity of the rest of the cage, similar to what you'd see on a 14+ point circuit car, but looks like a nice job.
Having recently finished the 16 point cage in my RX7, I am amazed at just how light a moly cage actually is, I have numerous bars bigger than they need to be, and it only weighs 43kg:/

01-06-09, 11:40 GMT+10#95 I've used about 100 metres of it now, so pretty sure Buying at full retail off a place in brisbane (extreme motorsport) is $21 a metre, and buying large quantities like 5-6 lengths at a time from Racetech steel in sydney (ask for craig) was $18.50 or something a metre, delivery was about $70 for 10x 7 metre lengths from sydney to Toowoomba, probably $100 to melbourne, altho I'd have to imagine there would be a distributor in melbourne.
We're talking 1 5/8" here(andra spec main bars), smaller is cheaper again.

04-06-09, 15:47 GMT+10#100 not in a VL, But its a cage still..
Anyone know much about the jap cages that go around the dash? some say they just fold in and are useless but then why do so many people run them? other then the price..
Im looking at getting a 6point like this. they want $700 for it. then getting more X bars in the back to make it "7point" i think its called..
Or do i stop looking at bolt ins and take it to some one to fab and weld one?
Matt.
