05-03-09, 12:11 GMT+10#83 this is one of my favourite threads to read. I must say Craig, you'd have to be one of the most inspiring VL Commodore owners on this forum. you have such a beautiful example, would love to see it in the flesh!
look forward to some more photo's of your pride and joy!

Gavin

06-03-09, 06:57 GMT+10#84 Thanks guys. No change really. She gets started about every second weekend for a run up through the hills and that's about it.
I've still got to get around to painting the wheels black before I put the hubbies back on and as soon as I get some time I'll finally get the stock exhaust fitted again.
After that I'm pretty well done, though it could use a respray from the windscreen forward to get rid of a lot of stone chips. Problem is it's looking pretty good and I'm not sure it's worth it just now.

13-03-09, 16:02 GMT+10#87 Every now and then, not as often as you'd think though.
Being white it maybe doesn't stand out as much as others, though it's usually out for a quick drive and then back in the shed.

19-01-11, 17:03 GMT+10#90 out of curiosity why did you choose white on white out of all the combiniations available at the dealer, why not silverslate or mulberry or even black?

20-01-11, 07:38 GMT+10#91 Thanks. It's getting there. Just a couple of small jobs left now.
As for the colour, back in the eighties it was all the rage and I liked the look of the one on the cover of the Formula Pack brochure (and all the HDT cars had colour coded bumpers too). The white on white is common now, especially with the VT-VZ Commodores but back then it was just coming out of the chrome bumper era and most of the other bumpers around were horrible black rubbery plastic things. It just looked a lot cleaner and the metallics were $500 more too.
Doing it over now though I think I'd have gone for Mulberry.

21-01-11, 15:25 GMT+10#92 oh yeah fair enough, yeah mulberry is a winner on exec's.
I know you said you want to keep it origional as possible but have you thought about painting the bumpers mx grey? and putting turbo hubcaps on it?

The hubcaps are back on if you look closely at the latest pics. Never really felt happy with the silver stock rims so they were painted black before I put the caps back on.
Yeah, I like the MX Grey bumpers better these days but I ordered it the way it is now, and have it written on the invoice, so it'll have to stay.
If you look at the dealer paperwork it says bumpers to be painted white and window surrounds to be painted black. That's as original as I need.
No, I won't be putting the ROH wheels that I picked it up with back on, even if I could find a new set. Horrible things. What was I thinking ?!!

My one also has the "heater" only as the first owner (I am the second owner) didn't want air con.........he was an elderly Bloke!

Aircon was always an option on the SL's, but I guess most people ticked the box. For me it was either get a car with aircon, or get the turbo. Couldn't afford both back then and am rather glad I stuck with the turbo. I'd never had a car with it before so didn't really know what I was missing. It was a $2000 option from memory and the budget was stretched to the limit as it was with interest rates at 17% or so.

Working on this one at the moment....

03-02-11, 08:16 GMT+10#100 Yes, that's the one Russell. A one owner turbo Exec wagon at 198,000 with books, build sheet and factory LSD.
It's been a bit of a slog this one. Some things have been better than I expected, others worse, so it evens out I suppose. I couldn't believe how dirty it was inside though. Turbo timer and the remains of an old immobilizer removed and wiring and bits of trim fixed up and repainted here and there. Just found out petrol works well at removing old Endrust goop that was splattered everywhere outside of where it was supposed to be.
Bumpers and side strips are off to be painted grey at the moment then have to get stuck into cleaning up the engine bay and we're done.
