most charters have supply rods/side reels, they supply bait and tackle, but booze is byo...i know a good charter boat up at terrigal and they have been baggin out on kingy's by 11am(maximum bag limit per day) and now he says the snapper up to 3kg are hitting well....thats 1 option.

i've never speared a snapper, no. would be a good fighter too i imagine! weirdest thing i've ever done spearfishing was trying to pull this GIANT octopus out of a rock hole. i had my hand spear and it was about 12 metres down, only saw it by luck. went down on a big breath thinking i'd get it out no worries then knife it (i love octopus, tastes great) but it had other ideas. so i put the spear deep in it on the first dive, and tried to pull it out of the hole. NO CHANCE. the thing was as strong as an ox, it was like pulling on a rope attached to a tree, it just didn't budge an inch. i dove 6 times (left the spear in it down there) in all standing on the rock above it and trying to haul it out without any luck. eventually i started stabbing the 5hit out of it with the knife until it started to die and i could haul it out. it had a tentacle span of 186cm (diameter) and it was HUGE. tasted bloody great too. all in all i dived about 20 times trying to get the f ucker out. strongest things in the ocean i reckon, pound for pound. pity they can't swim or you could catch on a rod.

yeah it was the biggest octopus i've ever seen underwater (you don't see em that often) it was about 30 metres off 3rd point at noosa. just after that i saw three giant eagle rays cruise past in 10m of water - having never seen one before they scared the 5hit out of me until i realised what they were. crazy big b@stards they were too, but beautiful things to watch. bit like a manta ray but with a different head.

the biggest ray ive seen was last week at work,i had 3 live yakkas out,i connect my line to a thick elastic rope and tie it around a bollard on the docks and just check up on it each hour, one of the lines was tight after about 10 min of pulling the line this monster ray surfaced, its hard to say how big it was,all i know my superviser said(irish accent)fark dats a big coont...im like yeah you think.

speaking of occy's those *******s can be difficult I can't tell you how many spears I've bent pulling those things out of holes , you know how it is you go for a dive without your hand spear so you use the shaft from your gun !! Needless to say I have stopped doin this , But I just love eatin them Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Sounds like a good idea Hele but there's no way you're going to get me rock fishing, I want to see my 21st birthday... I'm more than happy to go for a estuary spin with anyone on here if you're keen... And Paul, if you wanna go out for a fish I can lend you a reel or something, I seem to keep buying them when I don't need to...

The more people involved the better it will be so if you can make it down to help out let me know...
