Actually the XF shaft fits perfectly inside the VL TPS. Almost a tighter fit than the VL one.

You would be suprised how sensitve the TPS sensor really is. If you make it the exact same fit you will have no more problems. Then calibrate with an ohm meter. Good luck. Joel.

If you put the two shafts end on end they are identical. How do you calibrate with an ohm meter.??? Can you please explain this more.

Well you use a multi-meter (set to ohms) to check continuity across the upper two terminals of the TPS. In the off position (throttle closed) it should read some resistance but as you slightly touch the throttle the reading should go to infinite. This basically tells the ecu whether you are at idle or WOT (Wide Open Throttle). I did the XF conversion on my VL and I got chiptorque on the goldie to calibrate it. If your TPS is out it will affect you base ignition timing and so on. joel.

Can somebody tell me if this t/b is going to be suitable, came with the Plenum but it doesn't look like any of the others I've seen. It's got holes either side of the butterfly that I'm not sure what I can do about - thinking I can go in and get a new one if this ones not suitable? And I'm not sure about the TPS yet either. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ok, after reading all 4 pages of that i still dont understand how to set one up for a VL turbo Auto. I will be running a custom plenum, which needs an XF throttle body and a microtech. So i need the following questions answered 1) which XF throttle body do i get (big tps or little tps)? 2) Which TPS do i use, the VL one of the XF one 3) how do i attach the vl tps properly if i need to use that one.

some xf throttle body have a diffent shaped shaft so they need their original tps or need to be ground down to fit the VL tps. I'm not sure as far as series go but I've had two and they both fit the standard vl tps perfectly without modification. Using a microtech means you can use any type of tps i'd imagine they'd just have to program in what the resistances were at individual throttle positions. Attaching the vl tps to the xf is as simple as cutting out a 90 x 20mm long bit of alluminium or something sturdy and drill two holes to suit the xf tps bolts which screws will go through into the xf t/body housing, two holes for the vl tps which screws will also go into but have nuts on the other side, and one for the butterfly shaft to go into the tps. clear as mud hey....

I'm doing this mod during the week. Could people please post pictures of exactly how they've modified/attatched the VL TPS to the XF TB?

so for the tps do i just swap vl onto the xf?

Yup-that's what I did. Just adapt it like RB30X said to above, and you'll be right.

Nearly finished this conversion on my NA, but i cheated and bought an xf tb with the vl auto tps already attached to get away from all the tps crap..... great writeup too by the way. i'll put a pic up when i'm done

i have a question, after fitting my xf throttle and setting the breathers up exactly the same as Pastical (even used the same plumbing T-piece) i have a high idle. it was about 1600rpm but now i have checked absolutely everything and i have managed to get it down to 1200-1400rpm. i have no more ideas left - timing is standard - ecu idle is as low as it can go - screw on back of plenum is as low as it will go - screw on TB is closed - butterfly looks to be sealing well - all hose clamps are tight - AAC is not stuck - TPS is set right i think Pastical - what does yours idle at? can anyone think of what i could do to fix this?

OK i have fixed it finally sorted it all out and have it idling properly (900rpm is where i like it but it would go down to 700 minimum). I have discovered a few things that will make this a whole lot easier for anyone else doing this conversion. 1. a heater hose for a VL is the perfect size to go from the back of the plenum to the TB. The flared out 20mm big end goes at the back of the plenum and chop the other end off so its 15mm diameter at the TB end. no T-piece, no air leaks and a lot cheaper. then the rocker breather gets plumbed into the intake pipe. i used a brass hose fitting 2. get some oxygen sensor safe silicone sealer and fill that hole in the TB where the XF's idle screw was from the inside. even when its right in it doesn't seal properly and air bypasses the throttle body(it didn't need to seal when it was in the XF cos that would have meant it would have no air at all bypassing the TB and it would stall). 3. Make sure your TPS is set properly. with it 'switching' when you just crack the throttle it is too sensitive, it needs more give than that because of the XF's lighter spring. the workshop manual recommends it doesn't switch till 900rpm, 150rpm above recommended idle. i found this made it work better with these 3 things i found an XF throttle can be set up and running quite easily, its just a shame it took me about a week to sort all the sh1t out and i got so pissed off about it in the meantime lol. its all sweet now though. advanced the timing back to 20 and it goes pretty hard for an NA. i thought it was a worthwhile conversion in the end with good gains in response and top end

I have my own custom modified throttle body. Basically it is just bored out and a larger brass flap made to suit. Is good as nothing needs to be modified. Also got rid of the waterline that runs through the throttle body as it warms up the air going into the plenum. Definately made a difference on my car If anyone wants one PM me and I can give you contact detais of the guy who makes them.
