Any ideas???
making an adapter to direct 2tb's into the original (slightly ported) hole wouldn't give much gain over a single tb apart from the car breathing more air up to around 3/4 throttle, but from there up there'll be a bottleneck at the original hole.
you'de be best to weld up the old hole and put both tb's into 2 new holes evenly seperated directly into the plenum, this way there will be no bottleneck if a good custom pipe b4 the tb's is made up

if you go to that trouble, you might as well just get a custom plenum

hey guys i just got mine back from the shop. i did the mod slightly different. i actually cut the whole plate off each the vl plenum and the xf plenum. i then got a place to weld the xf plate onto the vl plenum and then to port it out. this way i have no ploblem with matchporting. plus the shop cleaned the parts up for me so its all nice and clean.
havnt got the engine in the car yet so havnt bothered connecting it to the air box. Just in the middle of converting to manual.
Also i found out that ford dont make the gasket for it anymore so i had to grab some gasket paper and make one myself.
ill get pics of it soon and post up what it looks like

You can do this mod to a auto. You just might have to make the VL TPS fit onto the XF tb somehow. Don't think its that hard making it fit because thats what a lot of people do. Reason been that most people do this to a manual is because they are after more power. You will probably notice a bigger increase in power changing a stock auto to a manual, so people probably go to the trouble of doing that first before the XF tb.

hey
im planning on doing this mod now, im getting the welding and porting done by my mates dad for a carton of beer, so that will save a bit of money. And i rang the wreckers up and they have a TB for $50, only thing is i dont know what series it is, which series is better or easier to work with, do both do the same job?
thanks

you want the one with the two pipes (red and green) coming out of it

yeah the one with the 2 pipes is the one you want. pick a part is where i got mine for 30 bucks and they only had one there and i got it. it was of a 84 xf falcon and has a 68mm port on it which makes it a series 2. series one has a 65mm port.
the other ones dont actually have pipes coming out of the bottom of it and have a different TPS on it. i guess you dont use the canister for the other type.
i measured both types up and they had the same diameter which means they made both types for both series. considering pascal got one of a 79 it might be a series 1 which is easier to do on the standard plenum but if you go series 2 then i suggest welding.
i suggest series 2 only if you can find the one with 2 pipes as you can just follow pascals tech artical. really it doesnt matter they really do the same thing, just s2 type flows slightly more

mine is 68mm as well. I think the car i got the TB out of had a later model motor put in it or something. Because wouldn't ford still be using the old carby back then in 79, and not EFI?

Got my car sorta back yesterday is running heaps better and i had a new cam belt put on cause it was a loose and couldnt be tightened. Pulls a heap better but i am just wondering if anyone has had problems with their throttle bodie not snapping back. I think it is mainly because of the air going though it. Mechanic is going to put a spring on it so it snapps back all the way just wondering if anyone else has had to do that, whether their car be a turbo or not.

sorry for bringing up an old thread but this may be helpful for some ppl.
i've just finished puttin the xf tb on my car. all is good apart from the idle(sits on about 1000rpm), caused by the throttle body not sealing properly.
My understanding of how vls work when idleing is that they take air from the intake(via the bit of hose/pipe) and bi-passes the throttle body and goes into the side of the plenum(where the idle valve or whatever it's called is).
to fix ur idle all u'd need to do is put a restrictor in the hose that bypasses the throttle body. in theory it should work fine, as the engine will be getting the correct amount of air for correct idle. not sure how much of a restriction u'd need but just have to play around with it until the total amount of air leaking through throttle body butterfly plus the air coming through the hose from the intake equals the correct amount of air u need for correct idle speed. this would be a far cheaper option than getting a new butterfly made up so that it seals properly.
hope this makes sense. what do people think ?
cheers.

well theres a air bypass on the top of the XF TB, plus theres a little screw that stops the throttle when its closed (if that makes sense?) you might have to play with those 2 and make sure they are completely closed so no air bypasses. Using the standard VL idle adjusting screw on the side of the plenum, i'm able to set my idle so low that the car is about to stall.

ahhh the car is still stuffing up. After taking it on the commodore cruise last night everytime i backed off (ie Vacuum) when i went to put my foot back on the accelerator again it had a massive flat spot, then all of a sudden just launch as it came on throttle again. Has anyone experienced this??? Could it be Caused by TPS still or by me bypassing the PCV valves, to my catch can.
I would post up pics of what i mean but i dont know how to post pics. sorry.

Mate,
That sounds like your TPS. It's obviously not sitting tight enough on the throttle blade and is giving you different readings. Mine did exactly what yours is doing before I got it fixed. Just cut a small rectangular piece of tin off a can and place this into the TPS. If you do this you will have no more probs.
Regards,
Joel
