05-09-03, 11:55 GMT+10#82 Finally gonna attempt the dash job eh data?
Damn, I wanted it... just don't bollocks it up to an irrepairable state, so if you give up and decide it's all too hard then I can still buy it off you

09-09-03, 22:38 GMT+10#85 Not too bad champ, just havig a break from the cluster for a week or two. Im going to desigh a custom circuit board up for the dimmer, to make it look better. Other than that, ive been spending alot of time on the car this week, just dont want to burn myself out with the dash. Otherwise ill rush it and it will be bodgy.

09-09-03, 23:19 GMT+10#87 Yeah one major special mod to get it on the road. Its been too long and i just want to get it on the road again. as soon as i pick up my new head($500 worth)Hopefully i should really be able to put some progress on getting the car finished. Ive got so many pieces of car here its incrediable.
**** i think ive got two containers full of bolts from vls that ive aquired from pick a park over the last two years.
I think i should be a gold member for that place.
Anyway ill try and motivate myself in the next few days to finish the dimmer.

10-09-03, 00:08 GMT+10#88 Neat. Any word on what the special mod is? or that a secret? *grin*
I wish i could be able to take my car off the road for ages, pull it down and do so much to it .. sadly I need it all the time

15-09-03, 21:03 GMT+10#89 One extra bit of info that might be interesting .. regarding the trip computer .. I already knew when it was on an EFI enabled car, the EFI computer ran the trip computer fuel useage, but didnt know how exactly .. it turns out it just reads the injector pulse wires .. I'm still researching if the VK's pulsed injectors the same way as VLs (3 at once) .. if so, in theory it might just plug in and work, without a flowscan ..
or were you already this step ahead Either way, tis what I learnt today

15-09-03, 21:06 GMT+10#90 Ive had a few idear, but due to not having a running motor i cant do much at the moment. But i have been investigating a similar idear. Ill keep you posted.

15-09-03, 21:32 GMT+10#91 Sweet. Friend just informed me the VK EFI runs injectors once per rev, injecting 50% of the mixture .. Not sure how compatible this will be to the VLs method?

16-09-03, 21:55 GMT+10#92 I was thinking about the v8 flowscan device today and came to possibly a big proble using it on the 6cylinder. Correct me if im wrong but with the vl injected 6 the fuel flows from the tank thru the injector rail then back into the tank. As far as im aware the v8 dosent have this sort of setup. So thier lies a big delema. Its going to measure all the fuel thats circulating around. Leave your idears.

16-09-03, 23:58 GMT+10#93 Hrm.. i hadnt thought of that .. Another thing that had occured to me also would be fuel pressure .. VL's, being injected, use a higher pressure than the VK V8 would have done .. i dunno how well the flowscan would handle extra pressure?
Looks like if the trip computer is going to work, its gonna have to run from the injector signal?

19-09-03, 15:07 GMT+10#94 OK. Got a wiiring diagram for the dash connector from the VK manaul from a friend, and have the following discoveries that are different from what we (or at least, what I) knew.
Power Connector: +5 for Flowscan, is marked as "Not Used"
Trip Computer Connector:
Pin 7: (Grey): "Rheostat Input"
Pin 4: (Light Green): "Dimming Control Input"
Input Connector:
Pin 1: "Fuel Flow Input"
Warning Connector:
Pin 4: "Lamps On"
Pin 6: "Warning Buzzer Input"
Pin 7: Headlamp On
it also has an extra connector that I dont have on the dash cluster, no doubt part of the side panel extra bit, has:
Pin 1: Rheostat Input
Pin 2: Ignition On
Pin 3: Warning Buzzer Input
Pin 4: Rear Window Demister Input
Pin 5: Warning Lamp Input
Also on another connector for trip computer functions is a pin labeled "Photo Sensor Output"

19-09-03, 17:30 GMT+10#95 Hmmm, very interesting. Does your friend have the original holden manual or just a gregories??
What would help more than that would be a copy of the whole wiring loom. That way i can trace wires to see where they goto ect.
Sometimes just the names of each wire isnt enought and from what ive learnt it has some funny feature on it, i just cant figure out.

19-09-03, 17:47 GMT+10#96 That'd be me, and I've just got the Gregories :P
I'm watching this project of Data's with interest, because as common as VL's are, a VK Calais dash in one would add that unique touch

21-09-03, 12:56 GMT+10#97 The Photo Sensor Output is used for adjusting the brightness of the dash. The photo sensor is located on the black shorud bit (for vk) that the buttons go on.

21-09-03, 13:04 GMT+10#98 I went to the vk calais i got the dash out of and looked everywhere for what your talking about. I pulled the black surront with all the buttons in to bits and never found the photo-istor(cant remember exactly what its called). I then continued to rip apart the whole dash. Nothing that i could find can verify that it actually exists. If it does im buggered if i could find it. I believe its was an option that was never actually used, as thier were other feature that i know for certain that wernt used.
synoptica do you think you colud scan those pages for and email them to [email removed] I need more to go on, than what i already have. Ive got all the basic function working including adapting the vl speedo sender unit up. Just got little things to work out now.
My digital dash will be getting installed next week for a trial run. Well see how it goes.

21-09-03, 13:30 GMT+10#99 Can't wait till I get the bits to install mine .. Sooo looking forward to it .. Do you have any way to making a template for the mounts perhaps? I dunno, can you scan one of the side blocks perhaps and show some measurements where it mounts on the side of the cluster? Then I can go about making up the mountings in the time being

21-09-03, 13:37 GMT+10#100 Hmm. Ill try and find a point i can reference the mounting points to, as ive modified the outer case alot now. Im working on the dimmer again today, i only need to figure out how ill make the interior light work and presto ill show you how to make the end result.
Cheers SHannon
