Hi - this is my first post on ct forums. I've always surfed this site for technical info etc. and i think this is one of the best car sites out there. But i really think its sad seeing guys with vl turbos guys hang **** on N/As like this thread. Having owned both an N/A and a turbo vl, i Think that both cars have good performance because of the engine they have/weight ratio. Odviously if you have a moded rb30et you not ever going to notice most cars on the roads performance wise. But when when it comes to the traffic light grand prix, it's more to do with the drive train, weight, and the condition of the car than anything else. With my manual vlt i really notice this - its bloody hard to get a good start from the lights. But once i'm moving, they've got no chance. Anyway, my old vl N/a used to beat heaps of cars at the lights, not like you ****s would care. lol Cheers

I used to beat other n/a vl's and a few other cars here and there, and even had a good run with alot of later model commodores, vs's don't seem to have anything when doing highway runs for example. And vn's have the torque, but if its manual you usually get your ass kicked unless its a typical bogan car with a torn ring hole.. But the point I've been trying to get across is that its not worth it, if you want a car that feels like your absolutely hammering and spins the wheels on cue.. Go buy a Automatic Gemini.. 200-300 dollars. Put a 4 or 5 speed transmission behind it.. 50 dollars. Get a good clutch, 200 dollars. Get the 1.8 engine, Work it, balanced etc, drop on some huge carbies, get a big cam and bobs your uncle.. ****s over most cars on the road and would **** on most n/a vl's.

I think N/As are underrated. Sure they're not as quick as a turbo but they're still pretty good for a family car and would give most things a run for their money. I've got a 5 speed NA wagon and anyone who's driven it would tell you that it's pretty quick off the mark for a family truckster. My dad owns a VT and says it'd give that a good run, a mate of mine has an XF and considered changing over to a VL after the experience. The RB30 is a great motor, an extremely good design, especially the bottom end. That's why the turbos are so good too. But let's not turn this into a d!<k measuring competition eh?

Are Auto transmissions really that bad performance wise? they dont loose that much do they? my n/a vl auto doesn't go that bad. Maybe if i put like a stage 2 shift kit in it would reduce the auto power loss?

Maybe Im getting old, but why is everyone so keen on racing on the streets, whether it be traffic lights drags, or not. I mean after continuing to hear disturbing news reports of young kids in accidents, tradgic or otherwise and these being the result of speed, the message aint getting through. I have a N/A 5 speed wagon, its goes pretty good for a N/A, but I dont need nor feel the need to have a list of what I can beat. All I wanna say is guys, please dont speed or race on the streets, there are alot of innocent people that share the roads with you, only a matter of time if it continues. Cheers Mick

Well said mick, there's no need to prove that you've got a larger penis than little 4 cylinder drivers. And thumbs up to the n/a 5 speed wagon, we should have our own club he he

poohkies you obviously dont see others bagging my vl as they already know, but for you..... my missinformed vl friend here she is ala streets. http://www.streetcommodores.com.au/f...ghlight=worked (http://www.streetcommodores.com.au/forum_3/showthread.php?t=44897&highlight=worked) his vl was stocka block. the only way a turbo reaches its max potential is before its rev limit. so he doesnt gain max boost just like that were as my car already has is. go ahead and punch out your cat and stick a drain pipe on your exgaust manifold.

o yeh forgot the mention if you read carefully its 150kw OR 110 RWKW (rear wheel killo watts) people dont usually read the power off the flywheel but what on the treds.

But you've got a cam in your car, your not reaching max power straight away aswell. Considering you'd both stall it up off the line you'd be revving yours to get to the power band then what the turbo car would be. Stock t03 spool times compared to a cam- I know stock in my car it doesn't really come on until 3k... Whats it like with a bigger cam? My mates old gemini- could have your foot flat until 5k and nothing.. Then all of a sudden its launching its way quickly up to 9k

that's what i was meaning, if the guy stalled up his vl turbo, he should be all ready building boost and depending on what stall. and also was it in good running order! If u lunched and have the power u do, u should have got a bit of wheel spin! while the auto should have just left! ???? Full boost just before the rev limitor what drugs are u on, a stock vl should be in full boost well before the rev limitor my vl friend, my rb 20 hit full boost at 5grand and held it all the way to 7800 rpm! so if he stall's it up Standard 2000 he should have been well into building boost to leave u, if he was a gumpy and the steaped on it after the light when green of course u would have beat him, that's like u letting your clutch out at 2 grand and then accellerating through first! and the other guy stalling the auto up, which one do u think that would win!

and to think with all that money u spent u could have just put an rb20 in standard and have that power then rase the boost to 14 psi and have a hell of alot more ?????? all i'm saying is it doesn't sound like much of a race, and just cause the guy in the other lane didn't know what he was doing doesnet mean u chopped a vl turbo for power, u chopped the driver! nothing to rave about my vl friend! and for all that work u did to your engine u could have save the money and brought a rb20 and had that power in standard form and then wound the boost up for some more power!

Alot of people have done it.. It's cheap and they are just as easily modded as any other turbo engine. Better then the rb30e..

turbo rev limit not motor rev limit, you know that a turbo could only produce the punch up until a certain time. also with a rb20 yeh so what i could have even put a rb25 or 26 top end on my na rb30 bottom. i chose to go this way coz it was simple and dirt cheap. as for my cam the actual power band has changed from when i had my factory vl ecu in it now its a smooth incline and i havent lost heaps low prm power. after i do a major head work. i.e crazy port and bigger valves then ill blow her. wit ha sc14 s/c. as for racing a vl turbo i classify it as winning a street drag against a vl turbo, plain and simple. im not bosting bout it but you think jsut coz i have a na and won you automatically think that the vl is **** OR **** driver. dont underestimate the NA vl, proply worked can be potent.

Ok, a VLT comes out with 150kw, for starters. What dose a n/a come out with? How much to get it to 150kw? So lets start moding the cars!! For a VLT to get to 200kw will cost x amount of dollars!! For a n/a to push out 200kw is going to cost way more x amount of dollars. So sure to beat a std VLT you only have to get ya n/a car to, in theory to 151kw. However your up against a std VLT and you have a moded n/a with 200kw...umm well FMD of course ya gunna beat it. Summing up: It will cost you heaps more to mod a n/a. A std n/a arent going to beat a std VLT (unless it's a sh*ter). It arent *****en rocket since.
