You sure are doing well on this one I dunno how far I'd have got on this project without your help, I can tell you that now Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Just trying to make it all as neat and simple as possible, ive got all the dimmer circuit desgned now for the old vl dash light and the vk calais dash. Its not too complicated its just working out the original specs for the dash took ages. I still might not have them perfect, but it the dash dims with the circuit i made and so does the vl dash lights. So i think ive got it right.

Sweet Any progress with the trip computer stuff? Not overly important to me anyway, but i am curious about it I'm tempted to build an extended harness to bring the wires out to the passenger seat so I can sit the VK dash on the seat next to me and play with things like that .. DUnno if it needs speedo or not tho .. As I dont have that working yet .. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I tested the speedo in a car recently and im having trouble with speed above 80kmh. I thought might run into problems with the speedo signal, thats why i had to see if i can do it the other way.

Hrm .. So whats the VK speedo sender you got put out, exactly? Is it just a single speedo signal for the dash?

Yes thats correct. I found that the one i made dosent make the signal strong enough, so it plays all sort of funny buggers with the auto trans computer and cruise control. Im working on a remedy for this.

Is it possible to make small circuit with a PIC chip or something that takes the signal from the VK sender, and generates an output pulse that suits the VL equipment? The VK sender puts out, what, 8 pulses per rev? and the VL equipment expects 2 pulses per rev? So youd need a PIC chip that sends a pulse out on every 4 pulses from the input .. I dunno how feasible that is tho ..

Just talked to a friend who works with PIC Chips .. apparntly it would be very easy to do .. "16cf4" is the chip he suggested be used .. Im not sure how fast the speedo cable turns at high road speeds, so im not sure how fast the highest pulse rate would be .. but he seems confident itd be fine at any rate itd generate .. given the age of the dash I'd say itd handle it too .. And in theory, the output from a PIC should be high level and clear .. so all equip should work with it ..

Yes your mate is correct in saying a pic processor with a simple compter program would do the trick, but im keeping it simple thats all. Im just going to use the vk pickup unit instead. It put out a nice strong 12v signal which is ideal. This should solve the problem. Only thing im worried about then is the speedo being out, but i wont know until i do another road test.

Well, assuming the same gear ratios for the speedo drive were used on the VK tranny and VL tranny, it should work the speedo fine .. but woudlnt that throw out the Cruise and auto comps majorly? Theyd be thinking theyr going 4 times faster than you are ..

Yes thats true, but easily adapted to the original circuit board thats inside the vl dash. So it should work out fine. Pic=I cant be bothered. Too much effort required. God im lazy.

Ahh .. so use the VL circuit with mods to drop it to VL levels? thats cool .. If it doesnt work, I've got a friend who could probably design the PIC circuits ..

heheh so I saw on another thread .. no hurry man .. do it when youv got time .. I'd be stuck on this project a long time ago without your help, so its all good .. Best of luck with the engine .. I was tempted to get numberplates that reflect the digital dash (up for rego soon as im now living perm in nsw) but decided maybe not incase it doesnt work out . Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Fraid I've only got that one .. my mate back home has the VK book (he has a non calais VK) .. synoptica as posted above .. he photocopied and mailed me the one iv got here, just the cluster one .. and my local library has the VK gregories book marked as "stolen/missing" .. I'll get onto him and see if he doesnt mind photocopying all the other diagram pages, and when I get em I can scan em (he doesnt have a scanner) .. So i'll have to let you know .. Have you got measurements/templates for the mounting brakets for the cluster yet? I woudlnt mind them earlier on if you have em, so I can work on the mounting brackets and installing the cluster and hooking up everything else ..
