How has everyones cages been installed? I've seen a few tech articles and been told by a few people to holesaw through the floor where its going to be mounted so you can drop the cage right down and make it far easier to weld 360deg around all the bar work. Is this possible with a VL or not really necessary?
Also mild steel vs chromoly. Can they both be of a similar design or does the chromoly need to be more engineered? Reason I ask this is Bonds pretty much told me they won't sell me a 6 point weld in chromoly kit to suit a VL yet another place gave me quotes for both materials.

Thats some intense stuff.
Those floor bars are outside the car.

No need to drill thru on a VL, just takes lateral thinking, we have done 3 now fully tig welded with no holes. Chromoly is just steel, but stronger for same thickness, so you can use thinner, thus lighter material for the same cage. I have no idea what bonds problem is with moly, maybe they simply don't have dies to bend it, all different materials require a different die to have the exact correct diameter for bending. I have no idea what their issue is, I won't do anything BUT chromoly. Plenty of full tube cars that have been in service for hundreds if not thousands of passes, hence cycles, without any problems of cracking.

Cheers for the info Kyle. I didn't quite understand why they wouldn't sell a chromoly kit either, considering I ran Andrews Racecars 5 mins later and they had no problem supplying a chromoly cage.
Heres the roll cage specs from the 09/10 ANDRA rule book too if anyone is interested

I could probably scan them and email them. The andra rulebook isn't online that I can find.
Anyway wheres the best place to get a weld in 6 point kit? Chromoly if possible

Thanks for the feed back. I agree 100% about the rear cross bar! Ideal cage because its way less noticeable than running straight down the middle of the back window and also a bit safer for rear passengers too id imagine?
bro sorry but is that your car in the avatar? if so looks amazing i got a black 1 too we should organise a cruise 1 weekend
Bump.
About to cage my car....can't get a straight answer though regarding legality.
Is a 6 point cage in any way legal/ engineerable in a VL in NSW?
Half the people I've spoken to say it's fine and the other half say only 4 point is legal.
I was under the impression that a 6 point cage was ok as long as it doesn't have weld in intrusion bars? i would also like some clarification on this...
If you need to have a 6 point cage, andra will want your side intrusions welded in, not removable.
There is like a slight overlap of regulations between department of transport and andra where for anything down to flat 10's you can have a 4 point cage with a removable drivers side intrusion (perfectly legal for the street when engineered). However once you go under flat 10's andra require front bars to make the cage 6 point as well as driver and passenger side intrusions welded in. This then apparently is unable to be legally engineered for road use as they deem the front bars a risk to driver and front passengers heads in the event of an accident as well as the side intrusions as obstructing the normal getting in and out of the vehicle.
The rules basically constitute that if you so happen to have a car capable of needing a 6point cage, department of transport don't want it on the road
In saying that though, I'm forever hearing of people who have mates who'll engineer it and plate it... so if it gets you out of trouble with the cops then.. yay.. if you come unstuck.. well it was worth a try anyway.. and if u happen to end up with a broken skull after an accident on the street, whether it be of your own fault or not, then that is just terribly unlucky.

You doodle, can have removable side intrusion bars with a 6 point cage, you just have to follow their rules on the clevis sizes used, and the bar has to be 1 5/8" x .083" wall tube vs 1 1/2" .065" for a welded in side intrusion. Andrews Race Cars sells a real nice cnc machined clevis you can use for this as well as the taxi bar, and car is still legal to go as fast as you like. Also as far as I am aware a 6 point is still mod platable, I hope so, I'm doing a 4 linked, 9" BA falcon with 6 point cage atm

anyone wanna shed some light on why my cage has been made like this...
connects to the parcelf shelf, then down on an angle into the boot, just seems strange to build it that way, im pretty keen on ripping it out and redoing the back section,

Its done so that the bars inside the car are straight, run down the edge of the car and are nice and wide, and then when it passes into the boot it has to bend in to clear the tyre well, as you can see its right on the edge as it is. They have added the extra 2 bars for more support on the bend. We do exactly the same thing with the bend but run a bar between the 2 legs at the bend rather than a support down to the floor.
To answer an earlier question, 99% of cages in this thread are mandrel bent.
