When I tuned my engine, We had 20 psi and over and almost 20 deg on pump with no detonation. Did a few K's in the car. Filled up for the Xmas cruise for charity and the thing pinged its brains out. This was from a local BP servo on the gold coast. Pulled 3 deg out and ran the tank out with light loads.... Filled up with Caltex 98 because it was the only servo that had 98, same deal pinged its brains out.
That is weird hey, that it still did it with 2 different fuels.. from 2 different stations.. U def sure it wasnt tune/temp related.. cruise for charity was well before the refinery fire which is causing the shortages of fuel in the south east.
I've been less inclined to give mine a bootfull over the last few weeks tho as you say, with minimal supplies around the place, there would have to be a few places taking advantage of the customer... not really worth wrecking an engine for a quick blast on the steet..

In all honesty... i've run my car on shell v power racing, shell v power, bp, caltex voretx 98, and mobil synergy 8000, thrashed it on all of those fuels, and never once have I ever heard it ping... or felt a lack of performance due to the fuel...
I rekon they would all be so similar that i just cant see how it could be possible that you would notice such a big difference in the fuels..
its like trying to feel the difference between 2psi less pressure in your tyres on the street....

I feel the same between fuels, but in saying that I will still only use Ultimate as it's what the car was tuned on so better to be safe than sorry..

Stuff the pump fuel. Tolulene all the way
I'd like to have a crack at 90% tol some day, formula 1 used to make over 1000hp from under 2 litres with it so must work. I'd also like to try E85, and E85 with tolulene. Ahhhh, so many options, so little time

E85 is available now in QLD from a company called Motorsport Fuels, its $2.50 a litre, which some people may winge about it, but its eth straight from the refinery, and 98 octane fuel mixed and sealed in drums, unlike pump E85 which is 91 octane and the tanks are open to atmosphere to take on moisture etc. Not long term viable, but as a weekend cruiser etc, its hell cheaper than race fuel at 20% of the cost.
