So Ive had this Berlina for a few years, It was on gumtree and 2 sixty something old gay dudes had owned it since new and where selling. I wanted to buy it but had no room for it.
My mate ended up buying it and keeping it stock. Then i bought a new house 2 years ago with lots of room. At same time my mate wanted to buy a s15 and hadnt touched the vl, so my wife bought it
for me.
As we still have no track to race on in s.a. I wanted a neat original car but with some decent power, not some caged up tubbed thing like my r31 is now.
I didn't get around to doing anything for a few years, as i had to concrete shed..then my wife wrote of our heavily modified stagea and she started driving the vl as a daily for 6 mnths..
i finally got it back and made plans for it
1. It had to stay original enough to turn back to stockish
2. retain original paint and trim
3. have period 1990;s style of mods..but with a 2016 flare to it, eg..stock intake/modded stock ex manifold, 1990's style long cooler piping..but new generation of turbo(no 60-1/p trim or T66), battery in bay

first i tackled the engine bay, rubbed it back. Decided to try the new style of spray cans to paint it.

Didnt have to bare metal to much, but cant believe how many runs
are in factory holden engine bay paint...that was the hardest part..

It started getting cold by now, to cold to paint, so i turned my attention
to some electrics.
First i wired up some ls1 coils..good enough spark for 150hp per cylinder

Then fitted them to bay

Started to wire up microtech
looked through shed and found a old cupboard shelf, cut it out to kick panel size and layed out where i roughly wanted ****..

All wired up, its not Milspec, but my wife touched it so its Milfspec..lol

Ive left all the wiring in bay standard, just cleaned it up
it still even has original gm stickers in good nic on the loom

Interior is all standard.
Except microtech ltc dash
B and M shifter has been put in a dropbox..then original gmh shifter modified
to fit on b and m shifter
Ive never seen that done before...

Me and my best mate Jason built a 3.5 inch dump pipe, 3.5 inch exhaust to diff
then turns into a 3 inch over diff and out back
hopefully shuts it up a bit aswell.
Used the mufflers i had in the shed from my R31 from 10yrs ago..

I bought a old school JPC setup for $350 which is exactly the old school
i was after with PSR 48mm gate.
Turbo atm is a prototype Hypergear
67mm comp wheel
65mm turbine
1.06 T3 housing.
aka a 6765
We will be testing various turbos with hypergear on this car...

Fitted motor with tuffmounts, dont really rate them for the price, fitment
is average
Had exhaust manifold ceramic coated black.
rocker cover has already been changed back to a holden one
cam gear and timing cover is going back to a standard factory black one
with no cam gear cutout.
-16 breather removed atm, will need extension to clear ex manifold..
Standard power steering reservoir was replaced with a alloy one, this will
be powdercoated wrinkle black later
All power steering lines where replaced and redone by hydraulics shop
and a new power steering rack was put in..

Wow
Blown away awesome job! Where did u purchase the black strut top covers?
Love the b&m shifter idea and how high do u rate the pro9 adjustable arms looking at them myself atm
0 likes
Strut covers are Lowe items, same as maautooks ones
Not finished with the b and m just yet. Still will paint lockout black and the shifter arm to gearknob to hide chrome and blend it better
I was going to use the power button as a high and low boost switch..lmao, also i want more than high/low anyway
but theres no where to run wire and look neat, as original wire runs through center of shaft..
pr09 arms are killer. Its a no brainer, once you rebush stockies and reinforce them..especially if you pay for them to get done..theres $100 difference.
And stocks arms reinforced still break...its just takes longer. These will never break..
And the pr09 arms give massive room for tyres, the next point of contact is the shocks now, not the arms, as you have to trim the stanard arms usually on the lips
aswell to fit a tyre
One less thing to break and the wife to give me grief about..lmao
cheers

The cause of all my headaches with this build..spacers upon farkin spacers
I have replaced Nissan rocket..lol cover with a holden one now, and just have a 10mm spacer plate made instead of 2 rocker covers welded together..Now the problem is running a intercooler
pipe across the rocker old school..as throttle body is now lower than rocker. I have now fitted a 10mm spacer between inlet manifold and plenum and have room for piping
Also only used 2.5 inch piping for clearance, and i think it doesnt need 3 inch cooler piping for 450-500rwkw anyway, just more lag ...but...
dont even know if motor fits under bonnet yet..lol

Ive done heaps more to car..but my phone wont let me download pics anymore
For some reason.
The b and m shifter knob is in 2 parts
Just tap it with a hammer and it breaks into 2..
You want to get metal thread out to use..
I then cut most plastic of with a quick cut angle grinder bit
Then got last bit of with a belt sander
when youve nearly got it all of it will finally come of in chunks
And you have a alloy thread to use.
You then open up shifter, the top part you have to die grind plastic off, so thread can touch top of upper inner shifter handle (as its 2 pieces) and then die grind the hole out of the bottom piece of shifter handle
you should be able to get the alloy thread in as a tight fit..
you can also take about 10mm of the thread length of the b and m thread as it doesnt need to be that long(put thread all the way on shifter and you will see what i am saying)
Epoxy thread into shifter . But its a tight fit already without it, so should be strong! paint thread black and you cant see it(it will stick about 5mm out of bottom of shifter)
Not sure how it will take getting banged
But im old and dont bang as hard as i used to..so itshould be fine
Cheers

Ok, so ive got pics working now, So i will have to take some up to date ones now as
these photos where taken a while ago..
Tailshaft and rear swaybar are in now.
Shifter all hooked up, trans sump drained and trans temp gauge fitted
Alternator on
Injectors wired/tps wired/water temp wired , just have to wire air intake sensor
Intercooler pipes got welding ground and are HPC coated internally and externally in that chrome looking ****.
Turbo is at hypergear and will be back this week.
i changed to my own choice 7+7 comp wheel extended tip wheel so now the turbo is a total one off 67/65 mm hybrid.
Also had a Ballbearing core put it in and had comp wheel attached differently for high boost
Had a heap of stuff also powdercoated in satin black- CAS cover/cam gear covers/ power steer bottle etc
And the biggest ****ing pain..had to remake the power steering lines as they dont fit as the high pressure line doesnt fit around extended sump and series 1 which this is..has different lines to series 2.
So My mate jason bought a pipe bender and we remade the high pressure line in hardline and got the local hydraulic place to weld fitting on it and supply some new line of pump and rack. Did that friday ...
Now have room for sump and fit big intake pipe to turbo and "hopefully" refit sump to rocker pressure equalizer..
By end of this week everything will be ready to bolt on for last time (turbo/cooler pipes/turbo dump pipe etc ) and stay that way
cheers
darren

Converted to full E85 now aswell, took the 1150cc injectors out and fitted

Thanks mate, will give it a go, I have opened the original and had a play, Thats fairly well how I figured i's do it as well, As for the banging, I too am old, so wont bang too much either lol, The only thing I m figuring now is to have the overdrive switch ona spring so I can use it for the transbrake, shouldn't be overly hard, thanks
