i think 200000 ish is pretty good for a 30 year old car thats only about 6000km a year . unless the car is in good original condition with only 1 or 2 owners i find it very suspicious that so many vls are under 200k when you know the dash is so easy to change then when you see all the vt vz commodores are all way up around 350+ i always go off the kms on the rego papers never the cluster

The car is mine I'm the second owner and never drive it. It needs fresh paint other than that it's immaculate. I was gunna do a build on it years ago but kids came and changed plans. I'm now in a position to look at the build again but not sure whether to do it to the Calais or buy one done. What should I do. Thanks donk

Everyone's opinions different mate. I personally think 200's high, even given the age of the car. It depends on what you plan on doing to it. If you're going to go all out it works out cheaper to buy one done.

I think once a car get to a certain age somewhere around the 20-25 year mark klms don't mean much anymore. I have seen VL's with under 200,000 klms and they are utterly trashed, I have seen one with 370,000 klms and it was still in reasonable condition. 200,000 is very low klms for a 30 year old car when you divide it by the number of years but it could have had 15 hard years of being driven and never serviced then parked under a tree and never started or washed for 15 years. I guess my point is you kind of have to look at it as part of the overall package, not just a number.

depends if you like tinkering with something and have alot of time or if you just want to get out and drive it now

Buying one done cheaper and quicker, building your own probably more satisfying untill you add up costs

Thanks all some good points there. The Calais has had an easy life I've had it since 97. I understand about satisfaction of building your own car but for what I want I can see it adding up very quickly. I've seen some really nice cars on here for 25/30k but I could see what I'm after if I build it will cost much more. As well as the costs I'm not sure if I want to rip gear out of my Calais to put a cage, seats ,dash etc when it's all in such good condition. I'm thinking I should just give it a good paint job and park it back in the garage again and buy something already done. Ta donk

Never ever add the costs up if you're building a car. Ignorance is bliss for your sanity Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
