Your giving me a headache! Take pics of the car and the 3x ID tags on the firewall plus the strut number and we will get back to you!

I'm with Deano, Best thing to do is put u a pic of the tags, particularly the one closest to drivers side. All you ever buy is the tags, so regardless if the car was once a genuine vlct but now has tags of an n a Calais then sorry to say it's an n a Calais. To answer your other question no you can't have a new plate made up with the right details because you have the right details as it is! The shells just a shell its the ID plates that make the difference, some may disagree but that's the truth. Also you said that the vin check came back genuine vlct so again I think that answers your question, unless a genuine vlt was smashed and they re tagged another Vl. In short put up a pic of tags and we can help you in no time Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Also pull up the carpet on the passengers side and see if you can find the build sheet and see if the numbers match

The top plate doesn't match the lower two or the strut tower. What you have there according to the lower plates is a Melbourne built, Madeira coloured, normally aspirated, Executive auto with a Sandalwood interior built in Melbourne in October 1986. AVL022431M on your strut towers matches the lower right plate, which is the way it should be. Body 111599M on the lower left plate matches up with a car that has that AVL number. Madeira is a 1986 colour. The number on the top plate should have matched the body number on the lower left plate, 8K196G J111599L. L234108L on the top plate would be an Adelaide built car in February 1987 with the strut tower number that should have read something like AVL030xxxA. The body numbers increase at a greater rate than the AVL numbers due to any car along the line (Camiras, Geminis etc) all getting the next body number in the sequence, but only VL's got the AVL number. By plotting those it is possible to work out whether both body and AVL numbers are roughly in synch. Possibly it actually is a Calais and two lower plates have been replaced along with the strut tower ground down and restamped to match the lower right plate. Rivets on the lower plate look far too corroded and domed compared to others cars and the more original looking flatter heads on the upper plate. Looking at the AVL number on the strut tower compared to other photo's I have of Melbourne cars the 'M' should have more of a spacing after the last number and the 4's look to be slightly different to standard. Scratching my head as to why you'd tag a Calais as an n/a Exec though. Weird. Get your painter to rub through the paint on the strut tower if you're painting the engine bay and I reckon you'll find something weird going on there.

I'd ignore the lower two plates and the strut tower number as those numbers have nothing to do with the top plate whatsoever (Different factory, different dates). Those two tags and strut tower number are all off the same October '86 Executive though. Probably robbed off a cheap wreck. Working only on the top plate then you have... 8 (Holden) X (Calais) 19 (Sedan) 8 (Turbo) G (1987) L234108 (Adelaide built body number) L (VL) If you can find your build sheet then the main body number on it will be 234108. That will tell you the rest. Cars with the body numbers around that range have an AVL around the AVL030???A range. Given that, you may be able to make something out on the strut tower underneath paint and, hopefully, just filler possibly filling the old numbers. Adelaide built cars won't have an M (Melbourne) after AVL number, only A. Yes, turbo's all had the beaten in chassis rail lip on the left rail just forward of the firewall. Problem is you'd be better off doing up a properly tagged car as trying to explain this story to someone later on if you try to sell it will pretty much devalue the car immediately if they haven't already spotted the weird tags and walked away. Still can't work out why they would only take the two lower tags off your car and not all three.

this is ridiculous & ludicrous, find who these people are and get them some justice, hope there is something you can do with the car, but do delete this thread, if any government departments see this you could be in big trouble.... good luck with it all
