This is one for the gurus . i think my fuel system is over pressurizing I cannot adjust my fuel reg below 40 psi i have the usual fuel set up 2 x 044 pumps surge tank and a lift pump in the original tank. The lift pump is a VN V8 pump First question Is this pump ok for a lift pump or is has it too much pressure/flow I have removed the top hose off the surge tank (the one that goes back to the main tank and it has fuel coming out second question how do you know how much fuel is suppose to come of this hose. Do i need to make another return from the surge tank Thanks

Make a bigger return line from the reg, and use a decent size reg. The pressure is most likely due to a restriction (obviously because thats what creates pressure...) More than likely in the return part of the system. Basically the fuel should flow freely around the system, the actual tank should have a vent to atmosphere. The fuel flowing out of the surge tank and back into the tank will vary depending on fuel flow, fuel pressure and fuel usage. As long as you have fuel returning out of this surge and back to the tank at full noise, full load you are sweet. If it doesnt return to the tank under those conditions then you need to upgrade your lift pump.

What is the fuel reg? 40psi seems OK, why are you going lower?

its got a FRR800 I do agree with you Duke 40psi is the lowest the FPR will goo , i know i dont need it to go below that but when i have the return into a bucket i can fully adjust the regulator

Absolutely a issue with your return then. I've always gone into the surge, then from the surge into the main tank. You can pipe both back into the main tank as well. The only benefit from the first way is if you lift pump is a little undersized and wont flow enough to keep up with engine usage. As a good rule of thumb same size return as feed is a good idea. Make sure all your tank breathers are un blocked and there is no blockages/kinks in the return.
