Why is it so low? Compression is a good thing, especially in street driven/every day cars.

it can take a little more cranking to start. around 6.5:1 is really noticeable. Off boost throttle response will be a little dull. You may end up winding the boost up a couple more to get the same horsepower to the ground. Fuel economy can go south a little as the engine makes less torque with less comp but if your tuner bumps up ignition curves it may compensate for the slower flame propagation of a low comp engine. not much else is really affected. The engine can warm up a little quicker in a low comp engine but it depends if the piston is down the bore further than stock.

Long answer: Low-low-low compression is old technology. It was only ever used as (a) fuel was crap - now the minimum you'd run is 98 octane & the lucky ones even have access to E85. So, fuel is fine. (b) turbo technology was very basic - now you have mentioned a efficient and moderately sized Garrett turbo with a ball bearing core and watercooling. Turbo not an issue. (c) advanced tuning - back in the day tuning was very low resolution and in many cases was a matter of leaning on it until it went hard and hopefully it wouldn't blow. Get your ECU tuned by a pro. (d) cylinder head development was very basic - you have a built cylinder head and big cam. This lowers dynamic compression and improves the knock threshold considerably. No dramas here. If it really is a daily & run on pump 98, stick closer to 8.0:1, and select an appropriate turbo & cylinder head package to suit your driving style / power goals. If you are lucky enough to be near E85 stations then I'd probably running more like 9.0:1 on a streeter. I'd only be running 7.0:1 with a large frame (think T6/GT47) and 45+psi. Short answer: You can certainly do it but you'll get a better result for a street car by going higher.

Manual or auto? More compression, less boost ! Shifty thats a perfect answer.. In the old days they used to run a decompression plate with two gaskets Technology is much better
