There is an adjustment you can get to when under the car (near where the handbrake comes through the floor). If the handbrake won't engage after you have adjusted it the maximum amount check for a detached cable bracket (they are spot welded to the floor and often come off). Also check the condition of the cable as it may need replacing.

Pull the handle up about 3 to 4 clicks (I think that's the recommended amount), then you want to adjust the handbrake shoes so they are engaged on the discs/drums. After this, go to the point where the cable meets the rod that goes to the handle and tighten the nuts to take up the slack. If you can't adjust it there the cable is most likely stretched and will need replacing.

what waughy said theres also an adjuster on the handbrake shoes behind the rear discs. best thing you can do is buy yourself a gregorys or something.

The adjuster is what I was thinking of, went blank when I wrote that post. It's a little ratchet wheel type thing that you can access through a hole in the hub of the brake disc/drum. Just turn it with a screwdriver or similar, a bit at a time and try to turn the wheel after each adjustment. When you can't turn the wheel anymore with little force, it's set.

easiest way to go is back the cable off under the floor, adjust the shoes up until there is a slight bit of drag, tighten cable back up to around 8 clicks of the handle and that should be perfect!
