!
Yes! , there are many other things, such as a loss of compression due to a broken timing belt, etc , this would lead to no spark in a VL too because that is driven off the camshaft on the sixes, the CAS unit has been known to fail on the RB30E's but I've never had a problem with the ones in the VL's I've owned.
Do your usual checks such as fuel pressure tests, check that there are no hoses or ducting disconnected , etc.
One "Bugbear" I've come across on the single cam VL is when a fuel pressure regulator diaphragm became ruptured and flooded the engine full of fuel , replacing it fixed the problem.
On my VY, I've had an issue with hard starting on a couple of occasions after running the tank low on E10 but that has only happened twice, a vapour lock maybe ???
The fuel system on that one is returnless so probably would be more prone to that, unlike the VL's where the fuel line goes back to tank from the fuel rail.
