Hey, can anyone advise, (i know its hard without hearing it) but if your accellerating, and then get off the pedal, sometimes i hear a clunk, in the rear of the car, sounds kinda Diff or could it be a bearing or bush on the tailshaft? Taxi's do it ALLOT lol mines an NA Auto. I am yet to change diff fluid, but its on my list. It happened in my last VL, but this one im trying to sort out any little bugs befpore sticking turbo gear on and running a high-comp setup.

if the diff is locked, check the bolts where it mates to the diff, they always come loose.

I have had the exact same problem since I bought my car 3 years ago. It was an auto but now manual. clunked bad with the auto in and clunked worse once the manual went in with a 2nd hand tailshaft so it must have been the centre bearings, but i just put in a completely rebuilt manual tailshaft and there is still an annoying clunk but not anywhere near as bad as before. the most annoying part is it feels like a fair bit of play through the drivetrain. As if there is a bit of movement before the power transfers through to the diff/wheels. I'm trying to pin point the problem but havent figured it out. but it makes the car feel like the biggest piece of **** to drive.

Upper control arm bushes

Ive replaced all of my bushes over the whole car with nolathane ones (did it myself) so know the control arms are good. Its not a locked diff, just a standard N/A one (granted it has about 250,000kms on it) Ive had a little look on here and Youtube for "tailshaft bearings" looks like it could fix a few things, not to mention it cant hurt anyway... seen as i have a bush/bearing press kit shouldnt be hard. Would i need to remove the shaft from the back of the gearbox to get it out? Ive never done that before, I do know that you should mark everything tho, so you put it back in the same way (balancing issues etc.)

Nevermind, i had a Google and there are plenty of guides on here and StreetCommo's that describe it step by step.

Yeah. Would need to rebuild the diff center and have all clearances and tooth contact checked

loose tailshaft to diff bolts. you tighten them up with the dff hanging down and think theyre good but you have to actually jack the diff up aswell and tighten as the diff will be so far down that the bolts wont be tight when the car is lowered again. i had that issue after doing my tailshaft and diff rebuild.

Oh, i took the shaft out. Split it all apart using the guides online, then replaced.. - 2x uni joints - 1x Center bearing - cleaned out all the grease from the CV, inspected, took balls out (regret that) took 2 hours to get back in the little cage, regreased - reinstalled all the bits car feels so much better all over and only cost like 60-2x unis, 35ish for center.bearing I would say it was the center bearing tho that was the issue, the existing one wasnt really moving too smoothly when i had it out, and the rubber was very stiff, but not ripped... Either way, pretty easy job, I also did the auto fluid and tightened bands, so quite a few things the first drive, it felt like a new car....
