if you are talking about the 'battery' symbol across the top edge of the gauge cluster, then it should illuminate when the ignition is 'on' but the engine is not running. Maybe the ignition switch is playing up..... and thats draining the battery. If the battery is going flat when the key is off there is something else going on. maybe a sound Amp or an alarm system causing the problem. are you 100% battery is getting low. has it been load tested to check its health? The plug on the alternator is for the battery charging circuit. I can't imagine how that stops the battery going flat.

The plastic plug on the alt has two sides... one male terminal and a female on the other side...the car end has two females? When the alt is disconnected and the light out so nothing else is draining it.

i had the exact problem over last few months, i have recently took my alternator apart and it had all **** inbetween the shaft and the brushes on the regulator so wasnt making contact to the shaft but now its all fixed. although it could be you brushes are worn out? who told you it was okay? a auto sparky? have a look at this youtube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uda_Znro4A8
