Hey all, Just wanna know if anyone has had fuel pump problems in their vl's when there running hot due to outside temps. I'm sitting in peak hour traffic blocking a lane in Melbourne out bound which is really #*^*ing annoying. But the funny thing is that it broke down the other day also cause it was hot. (3 weeks ago) After 20 mins sitting on the side of the freeway she kicked over no dramas and its been sweet ever since today when it was pretty hot again. I've had this car 10 years and I've never needed to change the fuel pump. But for some reason it still primes okay. WTF......!

Yeah pretty sure. Don't think they play up. They either work or they don't. I've had one go on me before while I was driving and was nothing like this. Managed to get it driving again after it cooled down though.

Like I said, I've had this car for 10 years and its seen its fair share of 30 degree + days and no problems. That's why I'm leaning towards the fuel pump. On a side note, also had trouble idling and starting the car when the tank is below a quarter full when the car is parked or sitting on the left hand side of the road close to the gutter (where the road drops off for water run off) like all the fuel goes to the left side of the tank and the internal pump struggles to pick it up. I Would've thought the tank would have some kind of baffle(s) in it, but this has been happening for a few years now. Does this happen to all vl's or just mine?

Perhaps see a mechanic and ask to have fuel pressure checked. Pretty simple to check both pumps. I'm not saying it could be the low-press. pump but from what you've stated above it's a good idea to check the pressure for this at the fuel sender unit connection.

Mate in relation to the fuel level have a look at this http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=255773 You'll prolly find your return hose to the swirl pot disconnected/perished maybe, the swirl pot performs a couple of functions,to keep inner pump submerged in fuel, and provides "cooling" for the pump.I had this issue many years ago, fixed hose new pump haven't heard from it since....hope this helps

I had this fault was the hose that links the low pressure pump to the pick up

I'll never take my car to a mechanic as long as I breath, 90% rip you off and the other 10% are over priced. besides i can do everything myself apart from specialised areas like the transmission and diff. Everything else isn't a problem. I'll check it out. Thanks

My external pump over heated as the hose that links the internal to the pick up had perished was easy fix, the swirl pot return hose was the pain to change
