Everything mate. I'm a turbo guy just got my hands on a vs senator. Trying to figure out what sought of power they make standard at the wheels not what they claim. What are good mods. If the autos are different to std 5Ls diffs. if they were a good reliable strong motor or if they got issues ect.. Didn't kno the ran a Harrop crank.

Man they don't make much more power than the 5lt but they make **** loads more toque, they run same auto and some have that hydra track diff what ever that is. Much the muchness with a stock LSD if u ask me, a cheap mod would be exhaust, if u got some $$$ laying around get some heads machined and a nice cam

And is there common problems wit the engine?

Service and maintain it and you won't have any problems. They are a good motor. If your lookin for power gains I'd suggest exhaust, Cai an tune. I wouldn't bother cams etc unless ur prepared to open it up and give it some comp etc.
Just do bolt on mods. It will have the hydracrap diff, piss it off for a Nice tight LSD m78 or even m80 conversion with true track along with some diff gears. 3.7 (auto) 3.9(manual). If its auto shift kit and a 2800-3500 stall will get it going better then stock.

Also if you plan on making some decent power loose the standard banana manifold as it is pretty restrictive.

Awesome thanks for that guys. Yeah not chasing massive pwr. Just something better than std n have some fun. But be reliable at the same time.
I read somewhere to prove its a stroker big end the engine number should start with VL as the std 5L starts with vu. Can anybody confirm this?
Yeah the diff n auto are std has a exhaust already. So might just change the manifold and tune it.

They're 50kw up on the SS and 30kw up on the Clubsport... that's a decent amount!

Wouldn't bother changing manifold unless ur planning on doing engine work. Waste of money. Do your bolt ons first.

05-11-12, 18:46 GMT+10#12 I own one of these bought it bog stock original down to the tape deck and cd changer in boot , other then gerneral maintance like any other car nothing special needs doing, changing banana manifold in my opinion is a good way to let it breath but unless opening it up to change comp, cam, head work etc not much point as a come manifold is around the 2.5g mark an exhaust, diff gears is good bang for buck to get you moving off the line faster if that whats your after as i believe the autos run the standard 3.08 ratio where as the 6 speed runs 3.45 , also if auto a good shift kit will firm it up, as far as performance mine pushes out 186kw at wheels but never been tuned to achieve anything better dunno what torque was but it pulls heaps harder then my old 185i 5 speed had perviously and easily gets me in trouble after some enthusiastic driving

Also the 6 speed runs a pull type clutch which holds much better then the 5L 5 speeds just more $$ when needs replacing

05-11-12, 20:47 GMT+10#13 Well the make a fair bit more pwr than the std 5L then. Most 5L make round the 150 mark from memory. Yeah it already has a exhaust and the std cold air. The plan will b to charge it in a few yrs just trying to get it up to scratch. All new rubbers underneath shocks springs ect.. I'm very fussy.lol so can anybody confirm the engine code for me?

05-11-12, 22:13 GMT+10#14 i planned to charge mine too either with a capa side mount charger, or i'd custom make a twin turbo set up for it , but so far cant bring my self to cut it up for turbo conversion and too many toys for a charger kit so far

05-11-12, 22:29 GMT+10#16 Thanks nasty1.
Yeah a mate had a vn ss wit a vortec side mount. Only on 5 psi but went really well. Plus no hacking panels ect.. Easy bolt on bolt off setup too. So I reckon it's the way to go. Does yours also have the blue top injectors?

06-11-12, 12:50 GMT+10#17 A Centrifugal charger perfectly compliments the power/torque delivery of the injected 5 litre.
It will be cheaper than making the same power naturally aspirated, with more driveability, and it is much easier to pull off if you get EPA'd, sell the charger, sell the car etc.

06-11-12, 13:03 GMT+10#18 The best way to get them going better without spending big bucks is shorter diff gears.
Anything more than intake, exhaust, diff gears you might as well start saving for forced induction - getting big power NA is expensive with the old Holden V8s
