Ok as most would know or have seen my car is out of action after the weekends powercruise antics and the clutch is the issue at hand..
this time......
planning to pull the gearbox out over this/next wknd and inspect whats happened, from what it feels the clutch plate has locked up to the flywheel or pressure plate??
its currently running a 5 puk barss button EXEDY, now ive heard good and bad reports about exedy but not in particular the 5 puk!
its been in the car for 4 years now and its held up through a faarrk load of beatings (3 diff blow ups, 10 wheel stud snaps, a tailshaft snap, 2 engines, diff housing welds all snapping) all this time it HAS survived untill now.
im thinking "depending" on whats happened when i have a closer look to just go the same clutch again. But im interested to hear from people that really really give there car (VL) a hard time and what they are running along with the brand, cost and how long with what hp the car is pushing. (not your mates mums dogs car that the bloke up the street told me about) etc
ive been thinking a twin plate and triples etc and yeah theyre all well and good for $3,000 but i know there are strong singles out there that arent as user unfriendly (as i sort of have already)
auto's not a option for me so that rules that out also!
DD clutches? jim berry clutches? exedy? act? os gilken? etc
who has what and how do you find it?!

Well to be honest, I do not know anyone that beats their car the way you do, so I cant comment exactly how a similar clutch would go in yours.
The common response here will be Jim Berry, as you know.
I'm running a Direct twin plate in my car. price is more like $1900 including flywheel, so still up there a bit.
heaps of 350-400rwhp driving on it, numerous runs at the drags and burnouts / general thrashing. made 480rwhp but then i snapped the welds like you did on the diff on the first run.
lots of guys using them, although Moe hasnt had a chance to abuse his yet, thats what went in his car that is aiming for what? 800hp? I believe Jack has one going in his car thats aiming for 450+ too.
clutch is heavyish, and bites ****ing HARD. but you can still slip it a reasonable amount, so you can drive calmly if you ever feel like it.
Unfortunately my diff is still broken so it cant be driven right now, but if you are in the bullcreek area and feel like feeling how heavy a direct twin plate is then pm me. moe and jack both gave my clutch a few pumps (no homo) before they settled on their clutches.

yeah iv got moe's old clutch in mine. il let you know how it goes in a month when the car is running

ive melted both excedy and xtreme. 5 puck and nine puck if memory serves me correctly. both from skids, the 5 puck not as badly though.
theres a mob over in nz that does reasonably priced quartermaster twin plate clutches.
read this thread for details;

remembering that its in nzd not aud.
xtreme and excedy carbon twin plates are both around the 3k mark. supposedly carbon doesn't melt like cerametallic/brass button. heats up and grips more instead of slipping.

Change your clutch to a carbonetic triple plate carbon clutch Dayne , I've heard nothing but good things about them you can slip them thrash them and never have to worry about them if its a bit to pricey for you exedy make a carbon twin plate ill post links to both. I'm a bit biased I prefer carbon fiber clutches they don't cook like ceramic and they feel like a normal clutch, have a serious look at them or other brands of carbon clutches you won't be disappointed.

I was looking at going a carbon clutch, but apparently you have to heat/warm them up, before they start clamping well...Danny from JPC told me he drives with the hand brake on to heat it up, then it clamps hard. It might slip if it's not at the right clamping/operating temp.
I went with a extreme drift clutch for my 25, it's a solid button, with ceramic...pretty harsh, but it clamps well, but I've only got 300 at the wheels not 400+ like you.
Clutch was 1800 including install.
I went through two exedy cushion buttons before this clutch...I've heard only bad things about exedy and wouldn't go them again, ever

thanks for the feed back guys, yeah i do beat up on it so i may have to bite the bullet and go bigger again. im now thinking against sticking with the exedy thats in there as the new engine will enilate it in a few months time anyway..
Im liking the look of the quartermaster twin plate on here and also a CT member from over east has contacted me regarding a hks triple plate clutch thats only done a handfull of dyno runs which is now a option. Guessing HKS is virtually top of the food chain?

close to yeah.
Not 100% on HKS but i know OS for instance are incredibly expensive to rebuild, due to the cost of their plates. so make sure to check into how expensive a rebuild would be when buying a second hand clutch.
something in the order of ~2k to rebuild the OS tripple plate? might initially be a cheap option that also performs highly, but after a while it might come back to bite you.
That said, a triple plate would be awesome to drive, probably feel much more like a real car and less aggressive, while offering better performance.

Xtreme Carbon Triple Plate is what i'm using. Got recommended it by a friend who uses it in his drift car (D1 NZ). Brothers got one in his vl too, easy to use and can take a hiding. I personally wouldn't use anything else.

15-10-12, 16:41 GMT+10#10 Yeah bro ive just had a look at hks clutch rebuild kits and theyre around the $1100 for the kit. Apparently its done bugger all work though but pictures will show that and i might get a mate over east to go look n pick it up etc for me if i go that way.
How much power is yours and your mates car pushing at the rears with the extreme triple plate mate?

15-10-12, 18:07 GMT+10#11 He's got 350rwkw+ and never had a problem, brothers only got 290, but both cars get driven hard. I've only just bought one for the 33 box i just picked up so haven't used it yet, but drive my brothers car a bit so know what it's like. But it's up to you, that's only my opinion man

16-10-12, 10:55 GMT+10#16 theres no need for a triple or even twin plate, ive just ordered a single plate thru jim berry for my car (551rwhp) hes got single plate clutches for 1000whp+. if you dont know what clutch u need give him a call, he sure knows his stuff when it comes to clutches

16-10-12, 12:22 GMT+10#17 ok guys ive narrowed it down to two clutches so far, i wanna go the twin/triple now to take some load off the one small plate, the skid pad at motors with a full car and new tread and 7k dumps just wont be nice to a single.
my options are;
hks triple plate
direct clutch twin plate
i spoke to a mate yesterday thats previously ran a 9.60 or 80 in wa and he killed the hks triple in a matter of weeks and then went to the direct clutch and has had no issues at all. its still going now in his missis car!
must be honest at this stage im really thinking of going the direct twin option, just seeing if actives can sort it for me at a better than my "off the street" price as they use them day in day out.. i even think its whats in my e series maloo??..?

you can definitely get a single that will hold the power, no one can dispute that. but when you start getting up to the sort of clamping pressures required for high power applications, the drivability of a twin or triple is much better than a nasty solid single.

16-10-12, 20:39 GMT+10#19 I have a carbonetics triple plate clutch. feels light for a triple plate clutch. the gear changes are really easy and quick with the carbon plates.I have given my car a hard time at mallanats. Was dropping the clutch at 6000rpm for 2 days straight in 35 deg temps and never had a drama. Car was making 565rwhp. i am putting new motor in it in a few weeks that should be around 1000hp at the fly wheel and i reckon it will handle it easy.
The extreme triple plate carbon clutch is a carbonetics clutch. I have been through 4 clutches ranging front single to twin plate clutches and this is the best one i have had by far.

17-10-12, 12:47 GMT+10#20 oh ok so the extreme triple plate clutch is the same as a carbonettics clutch exactly ( like made by the same company)
so many different sorys with different make clutches etc its pretty confusing really whats actually the best.
i guess i havent read a bad thing about dcs clutches as yet so im semi on a win if i go down that path =S
