Beofre anyone has cardiac arrest i know there is no such thing as series 1 and 2 but the thread stating that had very useful info regarding options and when the ***k headrests (series 2) interior was fazed in. If my calais is feb 87 thats would be classified as series 1? I have seen feb87 cars with full headrests... ESo ye if someone could point me in the direction of the thread or give me some usefull info thatd be greatly appreciated Regards

Most of the running changes happened over the first 16 months of the 31 month build of the vl,Eg there were 3 different seats for the calais, different door handles or when all the 6 cylinder blocks were machined to accept the turbo oil connections,so most of the changes went up to October of 87.If you want dates of this pm me and I will send. And dam right there is no such thing.I think alot of people think there car is better if it is the so called series 2(Bah hum bug!!)They also give the excuss that it is better to discribe there car to sell(what about pics??)And as such the people who do not know much about these cars a lead to believe there is a series one or 2.And so a myth is born,Does your seats have the solid bar at the back for the map pockets??If so it is the early model,Padding on the glove box and center consul?,Buttons on the seats??,Cable or rod for the auto shifter??What are the rear head rest pins spaced at?etc etc Cheers Marty

as it happens there is no "official" series 1 or series 2. but it is official that there are "early" and "later" model vl calais. i've owned 2 vl calais but never a commodore or sl, etc. my september 87 mdl (which is inscribed also on the top of the cluster) had differences in interior. the headrests were more 'luxurious" meaning they were padded/cushioned and draped in the same matching velour as the seats, not an empty/hollow square thing. the clusters are different, and in my opinion the "later" mdl one looks better but that is just my preference. the centre console armrest had velour on the lid too and so did the glovebox. i cant remember if the glove box was carpeted on the "earlier" mdl. but i did a complete transplant of interior from the later mdl to the earlier mdl and i recieved alot of compliments from ppl when they jumped in saying it was 'better' than the old interior. im not saying im right and anyone else is wrong, just my experience of what i have seen and owned. i am sure there are alot of other differences but this is all i can remember off the top of my head. thanks

There were 3 different seats during the VL range,AND there is no official Early or Latter,Just running changes,This is the sort of thing that makes up the myth! The cluster in june of 86 they added was the low coolent light and the reverse light.in early 87 they added buttons to the seats before the industry standed came in,And when that came in ford and holden had the same seats under the skin. Cheers Marty

Cheers Marty it wasn't just lights (low coolant, etc) they just added to the cluster. they are different. the speed references are in a different position and they have a different background too. i can't post up any pics but if u give me ur number i'll msg u a series 2, later mdl, or whatever the hell we're supposed to call these differences without offending anyone. i have a cluster in front of me that im cleaning and its different from my early model cluster, which is in the garage. im happy to send u a pic of the later mdl cluster and you can see the difference.

My first calais was a "s2", 87 build. the door cards are different, seats, headrests, padded glovebox and highrise, and shorter gear shifter to name a few things. the "S1" so to speak I own now has no padded glovebox, no padded highrise, hollow headrests, longer gearshifter, and a few other things. I kinda see it like the VE range except they never officially mentioned a series 1 or 2 there may aswell have been!
