Im doing my research into building an RB30 head for 400+ RWHP, So far I have the options of buying a Maatouks spec head or building my own which would involve a head service, new guides, standard valves, heavy duty valve springs, standard retainers and a cam. What has worked for you guys? what hasn't worked in the past? what parts are you using and where to get them from?

Depends on the size of the turbo.
I was using a wade 1147c with a T3 high flow (18psi) turbo. But the turbo was to small causing detonation. So I had to adopt to a small profile camshaft which is a wade 818
Details of head work (Receipt)
- Wade 1147c Camshaft
- New Cylinder Head Casting
- Performance Race Valves Springs
- Manley Race Stainless Steel Inlet Valves
- Manley Race Stainless Steel Exhaust Valves
- Steel Retainers
- ACL Race Series Head Gasket
- Reface Lifters
- ARP Headstud Kit @ 120 foot pounds of torque
- Valve Stem Seals
- Port Exhaust ports & Flowed
- Basic Reco, Dismantle, Clean, Face Valves, Syncro Seats, Reface, Check Spring Pressure
- Supply & Fit 5 Exhaust Heli Coils
- Machine Rocker Box For Correct Lifter Pre-Load
- Machine Exhaust Side of Head
- Supply & Fit Brass Welsh Plugs
- Valve springs pressure 93lbs & 263lbs @ .506 Valve Lift

Turbo ill be running is a gt 35/82R, How reliable would the head be if i was to run everything standard except valve springs head studs and cam?

Hey man,
My head was faced and hardness tested, 3 angle grind, acl race gasket, head studs, crow hd valve springs and crow tx2 cam and runs gt3582 makes 300rwkw on 21psi standard bottom end.
Head loves it.
No worries.

Ive just had a chat to this mob CNC head porting RB30 head (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xzBACjO_3Q)
So far ive been quoted
$450 for a head service
$850 for porting
$720 for ferrea competition plus valves
Is any one running a ported head? what sort of power are you making on what boost, what turbo and cam? also are ported rb30 heads more susceptible to cracking?

I had the exhaust ports ported to help with flow. The size of the intake valves are larger than the exhaust valves, that's why the engine builder recommended I have the exhaust valves flowed. Copy of receipt. Port exhaust ports was $300

HTURBO no offence but you spent over 3k on your head alone and your running a T3 hi flo? WTF?
Atleast put a GT30 on it or GT35 and turn some hp??

There are some pretty nuts highflows getting around these days... factory housings with massive wheels in them. Johnsons performance centre have over 400rwkw with a t3 highflow.

Pretty that car does a 9 second 1/4 as well so you cant really bag em

Ah k well thats fair enough. I couldnt possibly imagine a t3 hi flow being able to make 400rwkw though. the housing doesnt seem large enough to house such sized wheels and flow that kind of hp? but if im wrong im shocked.
How much power you pushing HTURBO?

24-08-12, 13:13 GMT+10#11 There is alot making 300-350rwkw... you can get 400rwkw leaning on a standard gt35 1.06 housing and probably more from a GTX series but I reckon the response from the T3 would be off the charts

i dont know man. that would be a f'n chopped up turbo. it probably only retains the centre of the factory turbo or the name lol.
but if im wrong im wrong and that is damn impressive, the quarter mile times show the power.
in the end if i dont look at it with my own eyes i rarely believe all the bull**** some people spin in the performance world. and the majority of the time the laws of physics back me up, some things just arent possible.

24-08-12, 14:42 GMT+10#13 Yeah I'm hearing you mate, lots of bullsh!t revolves around the car scene! From memory the last thread I read on that car it said something about a 1.0 rear housing or something, so I imagine there's not much of a 't3' left

Are you going to lend me some money??
I wanted to have all of the engine components ready & capable for a high HP turbo first. No use placing a big turbo on & having things break.

Only 230rw/kw. Turbo was boosting out. When I have the cash I'll upgrading to a T04z or GTX3582. But it needs more dyno time. I had to take it off the rollers because the car was booked in at 12volt customs.

04-10-12, 15:45 GMT+10#15 Can anyone tell me flow figures of a standard RB30 head? I'm currently having a go at DIY head porting and want to know if I've gone backwards or forwards when I get it flow tested!

04-10-12, 19:23 GMT+10#17 Theres a bit of an art to it, simply opening the ports won't give you the best flow. A mate of mine has a flow bench so we used to play with VL heads to see what would give better flow and tested flow direction with plasticine ect. His contact details are in my signature if anyone is interested

Hes now moved onto LS1's.... making 320+rwkw without forced induction.

Yeah, I learnt at trade school that RB30 heads are very easy to go backwards when modifying the ports. I would love a CNC'd head lol
