Hey guys Thinking of upgrading the cam in my vy ss myself Just wondering if anyone has upgraded there cam ONLY and what the results were? Would i need to do valve springs as well? I know i will need new water pump gaskets and timing case gasket but there easy for me to get. And my main concern is would i have to get it tuned straight away? Would it damage my engine at all if i didn't do it straight away? it already has a mafless tune, would it need a full tune again or just a touch up as its already mafless tuned? And how long roughly would it take to do, read a few places saying it would only take half a day which sounds about right too me, what i read only specified how to do it and nothing after that EG tune etc etc look forward to your replies and help Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Depends on how you do it as for time. You can pull the cam out with the heads on hoping the lifters stay in there place (normally they do) and not drop into the sump. That would be half a day. Taking the heads off would be 1 to 1.5 days not including machining. If you do take the heads off then give them a mill 20-30thou is good depending on cam. You will need valve springs and when cam is installed you will need to check pushrod/lifter preload again depending on cam. I installed a 228/234 600 600 lift 112 lsa took 30thou of the heads which got me 296rwkw. Need to get rid of the tri-y as torque drops off up top. Google ls1 cam install as there is about at least 3 sites with walkthroughs and pictures with both methods. Heres one site http://www.bowlingss.com/LS1_How_To.htm

I found this site http://sikls1.v8owners.com.au/index47.html If you have a mafless tune then it prob won't idle but should be right to drive to the tuners. Just place some tape under the throttle stop so it doesn't keep stalling at the lights.

My car is manual, I guess that it wouldn't stall at lights then?

Yea it will, it might idle low or start at cold start but once warm will stall. When you turn the steering wheel it will stall, desired air is different due to the mafless tune and will stall at lights when clutch is pressed. If you still had the standard tune or the maf still operating then it would adjust desired air to suit. Like I said slightly open the throttle temporarily just to drive it to the tuner.

You put 8mm rods in the front of motor to hold lifters up , did this to a mates vy Ss recently . Ended up having to pull the heads off anyway and put new lifters in .
