Try crankshaft out if wanna do it properly , or with sneaky peak if wanna risk it leaking again

Yeah mine has had a slow weep since bought the car 4 or so years ago cant be bothered pulling engine down for such a small leak , the efi 5 ltr has a rope rear main and the idea being when the oil gets on it it'll swell up helping it seal so if motor has been sitting they'll leak till swells . Heres a link showing in depth how to replace it

pissed me off too,
all i wanted was to change the rear main seal coz of the leak...
and everyone was telling me if your gonna change the seal, u might aswell rebuild the engine!!!
lucky i could not be fkd and waited till it was time to do some work on the motor, which is when i did the seal aswell.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the V8's are like , but the first of the V6 motors are crap in that regard , they seem to leak a short while after replacing the seals, it's probably a good thing they went to a one piece neoprene seal in the series 2 VN's and the LS1's.
I've had that trouble with the diff in that regard in my VY SS Commodore, speedi sleeved the yoke & replaced the seal, leaked soon after, then I ordered a brand new yoke from Holden & replaced the seal again, that was good for 6 months and we got a sudden hit of cold weather and it started weeping a little again, I hope that's all it is because the LSD's in the VY Commodores have friction modified oil in them, I think there has to be some friction for the seal to seal off properly.
I spoke about W Edwards-Deming on another thread (constant improvement) , it's very strange how they (US????) kicked me out of the building in 2002 after I finished my apprenticeship (he couldn't wait to get rid of me) ,my offsider who he previously sacked reckons they(????) were trying to get rid of me(????).

I use v6 rear main on my past builds. No dramas. Slung a set of new mains in while i was at it. No point dodging it up and have it leak again.

Yeah i've got the lip seal and a rope seal somewhere for mine but keep putting off pulling the engine cos it'll turn into i might as well put new shells in oh i might as well pop head n put new rings in oh while head off might get them ported , n before i know it i'll end up fully building it cos i cant help myself
