hmm i have the ellery one, must try and get the gregory.
Cam timing or ignition timing?
If you have to ask the question, I wouldnt attempt to touch the cam timing, if your cars turbo, advancing it could cause pre-ignition, and if its NA, just leave it alone haha

Its an n/a, I was just wondering what is was and how you do it, I'm only 17 and I'm still learning about this stuff, Ive seen in like build threads and mod threads to 'adjust timing 17 degrees'. Just wanted to learn..

Ah yeah its good to want to learn, 17 degrees is a huge amount, usually the vernier cam gears only have about 5 degrees either side of advanced and retarded. The VL camshafts all have the advancement built into them as far as im aware. Aftermarket ones sometimes need to be advanced manually however.
It's referring to the time at which the cylinder gets ignition from the spark plug. It's related to the degree's of the crankshaft (being 360 degrees as its circular).
So for example as you mention 17 degrees before top dead centre the cylinder would ignite (before the piston is at the top of the cylinder).
I wouldn't go touching it until you thoroughly understand it because you could very well smash the engine.

thanks
clockwise on the dizzy will do it.
normally 17 deg BTDC is safe on the ole girl but you want to use 95-98 premium to take any advantage.
I've recalibrated quite a few VL ECU's over the years now and found best not to advance the base setting as it affects the whole timing map. Just adding the timing where its needed and reduce the over fuelling that these ole RB's are factory programmed to do and you'll knock 1 second off your quarter mile times with a stocker for next to nothing.
note: before you play with any timing adjustments, just make sure its warm (half), the TPS (throttle pos sw), Idle control motor and the CTS (coolant sensor) are working & set properly else it can run strange at odd times.
Years ago guys used to add a resistor to the CTS wiring to make the ECCS (ECU) think the engine was cold so it added more fuel, problem was it made them run very high timing values which created the next problem.
