Hi im not a mechanic but I would like to know what people think about doing up a VL calais from scratch spending 15 thousand or buying a already done up for 15thousand? Will it be worth the money doing it up as there is so many mods to do?
Simplest, and in my opinion the best option. Is to buy one already done.
If you don't value your money, and you want things to be done exactly the way you want, and know what condition things are in. Do one up, but if you're estimating 15, you're more than likely going to spend 40.
yeah i would try and buy already done. 15 wont actually go that far by the time you do paint, wheels there is atleast 5g then you still have all the little things that you dont usually think about like all the suspension, brakes etc then buying all turbo gear and getting it tuned. then if you want to do the interior there is another 3-5g.
but like BAX said its up to you man if you want to try and do alot of the work your self and learn along the way and arent in a rush then maybe building one is a good idea.
RB30ET is a factory turbo engine not RB30DET. RB30E is a factory non turbo.
The 'D' in Nissan engine prefixes means double over head cams.
RB30s are single overhead cam unless someone has fitted a twin cam head.

YYYEEEEEAAAH BUDDY!
I currently brought a genuine vl berlina,, A6. looks like dog sh!t externaly but the engine, trans and diff are pretty solid. Its currently getting the rwc done then the reg. I am sanding it back and painting it myself, then im droping a A8 block in it. For me its a project and worth the grueling hours and $$$$ but for some its a pain in the butt and easier to buy a pre loved/ done up vl. Your choice realy.
Read around about the differences. There's lots of info on the differences throughout this forum.
As for buying / building. It can be good or bad either way. Hopefully if you buy a nice car that's been done properly you wont have too many issues... but then again you dont know whats gone in to it so it could just be a headache and huge money pit.
If you build your own you will waste a lot of money that you'll never get back.
I'd say with your lack of knowledge (No harm intended), buy something already done... just make sure a mate who knows what he's talking about goes with you.
+1 on what PROGMH said.....
If you are looking at buying a factory calais turbo then take someone along who knows about them or you could end up with an executive with a turbo driveline, but without the better brakes, LSD, better interior etc.....Do lots of reseach
Both have their good and bad points. Obviously you will save yourself a fortune buying one already done but in saying that you can also end up with a heap of **** that some dodgy ****sucker has done all the work on. You would not believe some of the heap of **** "feature cars" or "showcars" I've seen.
Personally I'd rather do one up from scratch myself, even if it does cost a bit more. At least that way I've got a peace of mind that everything is 110% and you can say the car is yours at the end of the day
mate dont do it to do it from scratch it will cost you more than 15k for eg
buy a car approx 4000 trans and convertor 4000, paint work up to 6000 depending how much rust engine well where do you stop you could spend another 6000-8000 (turbo, hot and cold side where does it end , i have an excel file with all the money io have spent and i am scared to add it all up.then a ecu wiring fuel pump surge tanks i dont want to scare you but think about it and doo some home work
a mate just bought an 09 VE Sportswagon for $15K, you're wasting time spending that same money on a VLT which nobody will want at the end of it all anyway

Take advice from older members on here! (put towards a investment).
Most VLT are stuffed & will cost you $$$ & time, Defects etc. Think about it.
A6 A8
Biggest load of ****ing wank to hit theses forums since the bov and pop
LoL
There is such a **** all difference between blocks that the sooner people realise you are just as capable of running 9's with standard n/a intervals than turbo blocks and internals, the sooner we'll all stop hearing about the a8 a6 ****....
Buy an already done car that suits your tastes the best... Spend the bare minimum and use the rest to make it exactly what you want..
have fun.. Don't get caught up in all the wankjob terminology..
Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
