Wanting to drill & tap the sump for oil return to the turbo. Mechanincs are saying sump has to come off and will cost $300-400? Do the vl's have an alloy sump? Would drill and tap or welding a fitting be my only option for a series 1 engine? or can l find another place in the oil gallery that l can T-piece into? thanks in advance.

you drill right through? Factory drain is just above where the sump bolts to, you will need to pull off the sump to make sure theres no metal shavings in there i'd imagine. Just get an engine crane from kennards for the day, make life easier

Yeah go right through if ya real careful u can go it so no filings go in but it's not advisable as u can and most likely will get metal swirve in the sump from drilling through ya can try a really strong vacuum while drilling and heaps of Crc or oil to hold the metal shavings

oil return should be higher then the oil level in the sump

I've done this before, I remove the sump, and drilled just below the factory oil drain, into the dump, and welded the oil drain fitting, into the sump

Sounds good wogpsi, l will put my oil return into the oil filter sandwich plate tomorrow, oil feed from pressure switch and water feed from pressure heater core pipe and water return from non Pressure heater core pipe, sounds right? Much easier than drilling a hole into the sump for oil return

Where do you even get an adapter for the oil filter? Ive been wanting to block it off so i can use an inline filter with an external pump.. (i assume this is what you meant, but i could be wrong)

Just run a drill then tap, Measure both threads and tap the correct hole to suit. Place on banjo / elbow and washers. ---------- Post added 02-03-12 at 00:38 ---------- You can also make your own oil filter re-location if you need to regarding the other part you were mentioning ---------- Post added 02-03-12 at 00:40 ---------- And you mean drill a hole into the block not the sump pan itself ?
