Hey Guys,
Thought I'd share my latest project. When I was in my mid teens my uncles passed down a jims mowing trailer that he had managed to destroy in 12 months (he had just started his first ever laboring job and business and had and still has no idea on how to look after his gear.)
once upon a time it looked like this -
But when I got it it was in pretty bad shape. we cut the floor (what was left anyway) out and about 20cm of the bottom of the sheetmetal sides which had rotted away. I rubbed back and converted a lot of surface rust and smacked a lot of kill rust (hand brushed) on.
about 8 years later... i decided to do something with the trailer. I'd just been to springnats and not wanting to fill my car with gear and not wanting to tow a huge bulky trailer i relied on friends towing crap for me. I was thinking about something inspired by this -
Xmas rolled around and after putting a lot of sketches and ideas on paper I thought, "bugger it" and fired up the angle grinder.
first this is it... dad had done a bit of framework in the past few years. mainly just playing with his new welder a few years back and some scrap iron.
those huge toolboxes are for sale BTW
it has a huge draw bar, gmh hubs and a heap of rust. also... E-Brakes! but pretty sure no pads in those huge drums.
hack hack
some of the crap that was causing rust
slapped on some 15"s and this is how it sat at end of day 1.
this is a good shot... so dad had welded on this new bar (bottom) it is 15 mil wider, sits out way to far (not straight) and also theres a fair gap there. I'll have top admit it's better than some of the other bars though. we welded some more of this thick bar on the back to replace the rearmost frame section aswell. thankfully its extra width made up for all of the crap I had to cut off (so rusted out it was easier to just lose a bit of length off of the rear)
I cut it all back, measured it up and put it in a better place.
that did also involve cutting and rewelding the mounts of the suspension.
this is how it sits on the end of boxing day.
it is 7x5 feet. since this was taken I've buzzed back my sloppy welds, cleaned up any sharp edges and sprayed it all black with a couple of cans of kill rust.
I'm thinking a wooden deck (flatbed) an aluminium toolbox at the front as a windbreak on the drawbar and some flashy lights and some small mudguards like on truck's or Rusty's trailer (the BMW)
Thoughts?? I'll keep everyone updated on progress. thoughts on the value of this trailer ? It takes up a lot of space and too little for a car trailer. I think i'll keep it but it can live at the parents farm. by the way the toolboxes and the whel wels are for sale should anyone want them. thought someone might.
- cheers - SIRoller
