hey guys i just got a set of VLT calipers and the seals are fine however i want to grease the slides up just to be sure. how do i do this do i undo the nut that looks like it aks as a lock nut then undo the cailper from the retainer. also what type of grease do i use. ---------- Post added 14-10-11 at 21:04 ---------- just spoke to my mate who is a mechanic and he reckons he uses loctite anti seize on the slides. but i was just reading in the gregories manual that if i undo the bolts retaing the caliper to the slides i need to replace them as they are designed to be used once is this true

You can use loctite anti seize, but normal wheel bearing grease will be fine. Yes the book says replace those lock bolts, but I was at the brake shop getting all my calipers recond a couple of weeks ago and they said dont worry about it, just put a bit of loctite on the threads

The SLIDES use regular axle grease (Castrol brand is fine), the BOLTS that screw INTO the slides use some sort of locking fluid from factory, but it's not really necessary. I used capitals to emphasise the difference between the slides and the bolts, as there seemed to be a little overlap.

its all done now i simply pulled the caliper off the slide without undoing the bolts the slides were fine and dont need replacing so i just used locktite anti seize on them and they seem fine

I am about to replace the pads on my R31 Skyline. Can I get confirmation that Castrol HTB(wheel bearing) grease will be OK to use on the caliper slides? Will HTB harm the rubber seals that fit over the slides? I am getting quite differing opinions about this when searching on the web. My reasoning is that the HTB grease used for wheel bearings does not seem to cause any issues with the inner wheel bearing lip seal which is constructed of (synthetic?) rubber. Am I correct in my reasoning that this type of grease should not be detrimental to the caliper slide rubbers? All opinions welcome. Thanks, John.

It will be fine..... a whole heap of bearing applications have a grease seal to hold the grease in & htb is primarily a bearing grease.. I like to use NGLI 2 greases like castrol epl2 and stuff like that rather than the htb stuff, just personal preference alot of people with trucks reckon it runs out of the seals even tho they claim its non melting. Idealy just dont mix moly greases like castrol lmm with lithium greases like epl & lmx and you shouldnt have any problems.
