Hey guys im looking at a 60 series that has been converted to a Holden 5L EFI, are these motors any good? Do they turbo well? Can u get easy power from them like with the LS1s? It has been mod plated and engineered in QLD so will i be able to get it regged or engineered in vic? Cheers blokes

It's a classic motor and yes with forced induction you can make reasonable power, but they're nothing like the LSx motors for making easy power

Yeah though, but let's say I was to put that motor in a VL how hard and what would I have to spend to get say 200rwk?

VL's came out with 5litre engines so fitting it shouldn't be an issue, your wiring on the other hand is going to be a challange. Best person to speak to would be TAB on this forum as he has already done an Injected 5litre conversion on his VL Calais and it actually looks neat and goes well. 200rwkW is nothing for an injected 5litre, heads and a good cam would do it, oh also a good tuner... Talk to TAB and he'll tell you exactly what you need and how much it would cost.

For V8 EFI conversion in VL info look at the sticky in this section. 200rwkw is easy enough but anything more than that and you're looking at big money strokers and twin throttle bodies The best bang for bucks are still forced induction. My supercharged injected V8 VL made 250rwkw on 6psi with a stock 304

Sorry fellas i should have made it clear, i have no intention of putting this into a vl, i am looking at a Toyota 60 series that has one fitted, its all been done professionally. But if it was me i would have went LS1. So im pretty much asking how much do i have to spend to get the most cost effective/power if you get my drift. Cheers fellas

Blower kit, fueling, tune, exhaust - $5,000-7,000??? Stroker engine build, fueling, twin thottle bodies, tune, exhaust - $10-12,000+??? It's not easy to give prices because there are many factors the effect the total cost

turbo it. stock manifolds swapped over so the face forward and a basic crossover pipe. they are pretty easy to do and should make 250rwkw easily with plenty of low down torque

I think they were a good motor in their day and this is from my own point of view, in practicality sake , I'd stick with a 5 litre if a VL has already been converted over to that,if it's EFI, I'd probably just convert it to a 5 speed manual. I think any V8 would go good if turboed or blown but it depends on how deep your pockets are,it seems that if one problem is fixed (e.g. lack of horsepower) you come up with another problem (i.e. keeping the power on the ground & not frying your tyres up), then there's the problem of having to fill it up at the bowser if you drive it every day. These days ,I've found a happy medium with what I've got with my VY, it performs better since I've upgraded to a Redback twin 2.5 inch system and new high flow cats,it's already got custom headers fitted to it and it's had a mild tune but the twin 2 1/4 system lasted for about 9 years till it gave way. I think an LS1 would go really well in a VL without anything done to it, the only thing again would be traction as they don't have the traction control like the later Commodores do, maybe you could get that working in a VL ??

first of all^ that sh!t is funny to read. secondly, i don't want to come across the wrong way but which country do you live in? thats the famous aussie 5 litre. if you can think of it they probably make one somewhere, stroker kits are cheap as chips these days, supercharger options galore and people have been turboing them for a while now too. some people do face the headache of cutting holes in the wheel well on vl,vn ect. to route the exhaust but you may not even have that trouble if the clearence is there in the fourby

they go really good stock in a 60 series cruiser id guess they would probably be better than the alloy block at creek crossings dont forget your gearing is completely different in a landy

The meaty torque curve the efi 5.0 has actually suits a 4wd very well, they are quite reliable, but the're no match for the power of an ls1 if we're talking basic exhaust/inlet and tune. however if we're talking turbos then they both fall to pieces around the 350rwkw mark with the ls1 probably hanging onto a a touch more than the dinosaur. Don't discount the holden just because it's old, it was and still is a very good motor, an ls1 conversion would certainly be better but does that warrent the expense as it's a much more expensive conversion.

Still gotta buy teh dam thing first ---------- Post added 05-10-11 at 20:55 ---------- OKay fellas heres another question, im again looking at another 60 series with a vk 308, it hasnt been engineered, how will i go in VIC to get it engineered? Cheers

I wouldn't bother. A) it's carby and B) the work has already been done to engineer it in another state, so I'm guessing would be a lot easier to rego it in VIC.

I still reckon the LS1 is thirstier making the old cast iron classic a better option for the Aussie battler enthusiast to play with, the first thing you need to do is lose the big clutch fan for thermo's and have a custom dyno chip made for it.

A stockish 5.0l inj in 60 series will be a bit of a let down! Iv got a 5.0l running in my gu patrol with duel fuel and on gas only makes 150rwhp on 33's... If I ditched the venturi mixer set up and went gas injection with bigger TB and cam I'd be confident in getting 200rwhp! I tossed up heaps of options on chasing more power and in the end decided to go the blower path - gen 5 eaton top mount running 8 psi with custom 90mm inlet piping to free up the restrictive rectangle port at the back of the charger. - 92mm TB -ported heads -3inch zorst - cam to suit low boost - bigger fuel pump - and once the charger is up and running will get sprint gas injection which is good for 300rwhp and if it leans out petty is mixed in. I'm hoping for up to 300hp so it should be a Bigggg improvement!! All this is getting put together early November :-) As for your 60 series mate if you do anything so it once and DO right, pulling engines apart time after time is not cool! Work out your cash supply and pick your mods from there! A supercharger is good for heavy ass forbies as you get plenty of torque low in the revs helping in fuel economy(or lack of). Hope all this helps
