hey guys, im noob at diffs so please help me out. its almost time for me to start collecting differential/ suspension parts for my project. ive noticed a few people running 9inch diffs with the suspension moved inwards. like a 4link i guess. why do they decide to use a 9inch diff instead of rebuilding/ strengthing the standard vl turbo diff. my car has bar work in the boot for the suspension to be moved inwards, so obviously i want to use it. [/COLOR] the car is being built for show/strip. producing around the 600hp mark. so what diff do i buy/ build ?? what else do i need to fit in a 9inch diff, does it need to be shortened? different mounts welded on? zak. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

One of the main reasons 9's are used is they are easier to repair than a 12bolt chev when you are on the side of the road or at the track. They are far from the strongest differential in standard form BUT with the host of aftermarket parts that are available for them, they can be built up to be. Generally start with an aftermarket Currie's (or other) boxed housing, strange gear set, full floating billet axles and yoke, and all that left from the original fffff ord 9" is the breather tube.

I've heard of a few reasons, one in particular is the belief that BW78 (standard VL diffs) have a fairly weak pinion, which doesn't do so well in drag/hard launch applications. I also heard that billet pinion/gearsets are available, but I never looked any further into it. There are a LOT more parts available for the 9", as it's a very widely used diff in the US, and has remained unchanged for many years across a lot of different vehicles. It is a heavier diff than the BW78, which is probably why they're so strong. They also come apart in a different manner, which makes them easier to work on; as mentioned by bachig24u.

good points, Although the stock VL diffs last when used with an Auto (no trans brake), with 28 spline billet axles with a mini spool.. Good for atleast 500HP. I haven't seen them do more than that as the cars I've come across will go to larger diff and stronger suspension setup when pushing past the 500 pony mark. You just don't risk a blow up at 200+km/h. Has anyone else pushed the VL diffs more? like to know. Do the suspension mounts on the body start to tear off? trailing arms bend etc?

Availability of parts, from centers, diff housings, ratios and axels. They are strong but bloody heavy aswell. Suspension is moved inwards to allow for larger tubs and therefore tyres.

Isn't that diff shop with the 2JZ vl calais that does 8s or 9s from over wa ? Phil Purser i think his name is . He should be able to set you on the right track . People forget that the diff centres are so much easier to change on 9 inch diffs . The range of ratio's available for them is crazy .

Get a professional to build you one and that way you'll get one that is square if they use a jig. There's some dodgy 9 inch conversions out there where they cut your BW centre section out and replace it with the 9 inch centre... so you're still running the same tubes. It's an old way of doing it but doesnt always work as things dont always line up perfectly. I've spent thousands building 9 inches and next time I'd go to a shop and get a brand new housing and everything made. Best thing about a 9 inch is the centre unbolts as a complete unit and drops straight out of the housing and you can easily repair, replace or change ratio's.
