How long has your N/A motor with a turbo lasted?

I have an N/a and bought a turbo set up and have asked a few mechanics to fit it for me but they tell me that the head gasket will blow in six months or less the oil pump will self destruct the piston rings will be torn to shreads and the engine wont last more than a year. I'm curious as to how long the stock hi comp motor might last? Obviously you cant know for sure not knowing how many KS are on it or the service history I'd just like to get an Idea of how long other people's motors have lasted with out any mods? Also what's a good reasonable price to be charged for fitting? I have the complete factory set up that needs to be assembled?

Mine lasted 3 years and all I did was a head gasket once and it was driven everyday

i had one that lasted 2yrs, daily driven, as it was the only car i had, i put it together, and towed it to the dyno, got it tuned to perfection, and enjoyed it through 2 summers. Another one i had, i high comp one, which i had for 12mths before i sold it, was also great, but again, i got it dyno'd as soon as i finished it. If tuned perfectly, they'll last forever, as long as you dont play with boost levels after the tune is done.

Phil, put it all on yourself, you could do it over a weekend and save thousands in labour costs

Never knew unless you do it Get some new rings and bearings in it to freshen it up, around a grand or cheaper from a engine builder. Its all in the tune to make it last.. There guys on here making 400hp+ on a 200km old a6 bottom end! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I did it to one years ago and lasted 3 days on a genuine 160000km motor, mark pro vlt ran 12.3 for over 2 years on a a6 and never had an issue, was always driven hard!

Would it be worth it to install a knock block on a high comp??? Being a high compression motor. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

That sounds a bit too expensive for me I'm on a very limited budget if I was going to do that I'd buy an 8a block and do it properly. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

the only difference between an a6 and a8 block is the piston tops, and all that does is change the compression.. an a6 with a decomp gasket is essentially an a8!

i have a knock sensor... in the boot. seriously, mine was soooo easy. remove exhaust manifold remove top half intake manifold remove oil and water bungs from block, install oil drain fitting to block getting the turbo and manifold was a headache onto the side of the block, but do it up loosely. get under the car, line up the banjo's (this took the longest of all) and get them fitted. run oil drain hose (easy). run water line to RHS side of car install T piece for water remove injector rail, replace with VLT injectors and NA rail reinstall intake top half (i didn't even use the gasket, just blue ****) install exhaust pipe, crossover/cooler do oil change start her up.

Very cool. Everyone always says so, its all in the tune... How so though? What computer do you have shane, what tune are you looking for? Im still learning so thanks for your patience Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

People say its all in the tune because detonation (lack of fuel) damages pistons and causes blown head gaskets... A higher compression motor produces more heat which burns fuel quicker... if your car is tuned properly it shouldn't ping thus lasting longer than an untuned motor...

Im still learning so thanks for your patience Just a dirty old microtech, its not the most ideal ecu (has a bit of timing drift). Mines tuned fat at 10.8-11.0 to keep it cool, and very conservative with timing. I pulled 4 degrees of timing through the midrange (6 degrees at peak torque) after the tune just to be sure it wouldnt have a rattle. 12 degrees total up top @ 17psi. This is with a different camshaft though, standard N/A cam wont take much timing at all. Although i still ran 117mph on a dead stock engine with bolt ons. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

My stock motor has had a TO4E on 9psi on it for a long time. (before I had it). I do believe it has a lot to do with the tune, boost. I am using a nistune and always warm up and cool down thoroughly.
